TC West boys claim Big North title

Kingsley, Rayders sweep leagues

CADILLAC — Four teams took turns running in front.

In the end, the Traverse City West boys crossed the finish line first, literally.

The Titans dominated two of the final three events and held on to win the Big North Conference championships at Cadillac on Wednesday.

TC West finished with 121½ points. TC Central was second with 110 followed by Alpena (102), Petoskey (101), Gaylord (48) and Cadillac (40½).

The Titans and Trojans were the only teams to place in 16 of the 17 events at the meet. Central coach John Lober said the BNC was "the closest its been in nine years” with four teams topping the 100-point mark.

"It was a great meet,” Lober said. "All four teams led at one point. Different teams dominated different events.”

TC West closed out the meet by winning the 1600 relay in 3:32.26. Seth Ankerson, Matt Gulseth, Andrew Space and Greg Forrester won the race for the Titans.

But an event West didn't take first in may have made all the difference. The Titans went 2-3 in the 200 with Dustin Shales and Will Kittendorf, respectively, running in the slow heat.

That meant 14 crucial points for the Titans.

"It was a great team effort,” West coach Jerry Ruskowski said. "We only took three first places. To win a meet like that the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth places did the job.”

Gulseth won the 110 hurdles (15.73) and Dylan Comer the discus (138'2”) to lead TC West.

Lee Spanski had a hand in two victories for TC Central and Jacob Secor defended his title in the 3200 (10:08.57).
