ANTRIM COUNTY

Voters in Milton Township narrowly approved a proposal to raise taxes by 0.3 mills over six years to fund road improvements, with a final tally of 187 to 157. The tax will raise an estimated $75,906 in the first year.

Alba Public School voters approved a request to renew for five years a 17.95-mill levy on non-homestead properties by a vote of 130 to 43. Two of four candidates were elected to four-year terms on the board of education, including James Jewell with 127 votes and Terrance Milbocker with 99 votes. The two unsuccessful candidates were Charles Lord with 39 votes and Roy Wicht with 66 votes.

Voters in Bellaire Public Schools approved a one-year renewal of an 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property by a tally of 139 to 25. Also, Roger Kent and Patricia Savant were elected to a pair of four-year terms on the school board with 143 and 155 votes, respectively.

In Central Lake Public Schools, Neil Gordon Rogers was elected with 154 votes as the sole candidate for a vacancy for a school board term that expires next year. Frank Verellen alone ran for a single four-year term and received 151 votes. Voters also approved a one-year renewal of an 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property by a vote of 142 to 30.

Voters in Elk Rapids Public Schools approved one and rejected another building and site-sinking fund proposal. The rejected proposal called for 0.22 mills for five years for technology improvements. Only 590 voters supported that idea, while 621 rejected it. The second, approved proposal will raise taxes by 0.11 mills for eight years and raise an estimated $645,000 to build a new bus maintenance garage. It was approved by two votes: 604 in favor and 602 opposed. Martha McGuire and Sherry Steffen were elected to four-year terms on the board of education with 862 and 808 votes, respectively.

Voters approved Ellsworth Community School's request for a one-year renewal of an 18-mill levy on non-homestead property with a vote of 145 to 30. A second proposal was also approved by a vote of 122 to 53, which will levy for two years a 0.95-mill tax to purchase a pair of new school buses. Two of three candidates were elected to four-year terms on the school board, including Carol Drenth with 111 votes and Doug Seaney with 119. Candidate Kathy Halcin had 81 votes.

In Mancelona Public Schools, Catherine Harden won the race with Gerald Cook for a single four-year term on the school board. Harden got 231 votes and Cook got 181. Voters approved by a 276 to 163 margin a five-year renewal of a 0.4-mill site sinking fund tax for general district maintenance and construction. The tax will raise an estimated $116,411 in its first year. Voters also approved an 18-mill operating millage renewal on non-homestead properties with 324 votes of approval and 113 opposed.

BENZIE COUNTY

There were no elections on the May 8 ballot in Benzie County.

CHARLEVOIX COUNTY

All three candidates were elected who ran for three six-year terms on the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District Board. Robert Anderson got 1,264 votes, Jay Essenberg got 1,354 votes and Mary Jason got 1,399.

Voters in St. James Township approved a 0.25-mill levy renewal to fund the Beaver Island Historical Society, by a tally of 94 to 21.

Voters approved by a 144 to 34 tally a proposal from Beaver Island Community School that requested a 15.79-mill operating millage renewal on non-homestead properties. Two of three candidates were elected to four-year terms on the board of education, including Kristina Drost with 125 votes and Gail Weede with 120 votes. Richard Speck earned 101 votes.

Boyne Falls Public School has two four-year terms open on the school board and election results are still pending. Candidates on the ballot were Ann Boettger with 81 votes and Ralph Towne with 73 votes. A write-in candidate got 100 votes, but those still need final verification, election officials said.

It was a close race for two four-year positions on the board of education for Boyne City Public Schools, with the second winner taking a spot by just one vote. Richard Mansfield got 193 votes, while Marty Moody got 160 and Billie Reinhardt got 161 votes.

Voters in Charlevoix Public Schools approved an 18-mill operating millage renewal on non-homestead properties by a tally of 638 to 410. Dale Boss was elected to the single four-year term on the board of education with 725 votes. Candidate Lisa Carlson got 323 votes.

Voters in East Jordan Public Schools elected two candidates to four-year terms on the school board, including Kevin Keane with 306 votes and Gerald Peck with 335 votes. Charles Day earned 109 votes. Voters also approved an 18-mill operating millage renewal on non-homestead properties by a vote of 316 to 111.

CHEBOYGAN COUNTY

Voters approved an operating millage proposal in Cheboygan County for Cheboygan Area Schools by a margin of 908 to 446. It asked to levy in 2007 the tax rate of 18 mills, or $18 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation. The approved millage will be levied this year and the district will collect approximately $4.77 million.

Two out of three candidates for the Cheboygan Area Schools Board of Education were elected to four-year terms. Craig Duncan got 913 votes and Robert Merrick got 1,021 votes. Candidate Joanne Welihan had 571 votes.

Voters approved an operating millage renewal proposal in Cheboygan County for Inland Lakes Schools in Indian River by a margin of 340 to 87. It asked to levy in 2007 the tax rate of 18 mills. The millage will be levied this year and the district will collect approximately $3.59 million.

Richard deVore, treasurer of the Inland Lakes Schools Board of Education, was re-elected to another four-year term on May 8 with 346 votes. Write-in candidate Josh Gelatt was also elected with 128 handwritten votes, while two other write-in candidates were not successful. They were Tammy Beaudry with 81 votes and Randy Stewart with 67 votes.

Voters approved an operating millage renewal in Cheboygan County for Wolverine Community Schools by a vote of 87 to 23. It asked to levy for 2007 the tax rate of 18 mills. The millage will be levied this year and the district will collect approximately $762,000.

David Ashenfelter was the only candidate elected for two open positions on the Wolverine Schools Board of Education. He got 90 votes and will serve a four-year term. A second open board position remains.

There are two trustees on the Mackinaw City Public Schools Board of Education who were re-elected for additional four-year terms. Valerie Dullack got 30 votes and Marilyn McFarland got 39.

CRAWFORD COUNTY

Voters approved an operating millage renewal proposal in Crawford County for Crawford-Au Sable School District by voters by a 683-284 tally. It asked to continue to levy for three years the tax rate of 18 mills, or $18 on each $1,000 of taxable valuation. The approved millage will be levied in 2007 and the district will collect approximately $4.9 million.

Two members of the Crawford-Au Sable School District Board of Education were re-elected. William Dean, board president, received 787 votes, while Lewis Madill, board vice-president, received 712 votes. Challenger Craig Stewart picked up 262 votes.

Voters approved a Headlee restoration millage request for the C.O.O.R. Intermediate School District by a 604 to 354 tally. The five-year millage will be levied in 2007 and will collect about $364,000 for special education programs.

Three candidates who ran for three positions on the C.O.O.R. Board of Directors were elected for six-year terms. Lois Byrd, vice-president, got 563 votes, while trustee William Langendorfer got 538 votes. John Rosczyk also ran for an open seat on the board and earned 571 votes.

Two out of eight candidates for the Kirtland Community College Board of Trustees were elected by wide margins to six-year terms ending in 2013. Mary Ann Ferrigan got the most votes at 471, while John Pilon was elected with 439 votes. The remaining candidates and their vote tallies are: Anthony Coln, 48; Ruggero Dozzi, 82; Detmar Finke, 123; C.A. Karstendiek, 34; George Kozlowski, 96; and, Patricia Webb, 189. Denis Weiss was elected with 546 votes in an unopposed race for a partial term ending in 2010.

EMMET COUNTY

Voters in Petoskey Public Schools soundly defeated a proposal for a 0.5-mill tax increase over 20 years to fund the construction of new athletic facilities by a 2,457 to 1,473 tally. A second proposal also failed, which sought approval of a seven-year, 0.25-mill increase to raise money to operate district athletic and recreational facilities. That question went down in a 2,315 to 1,621 vote.

Also, two of three candidates for four-year terms on the board of education were elected, including William Kanine with 2,426 votes and Jack Van Treese with 2,359 votes. James Oppermann received 1,432 votes.

In Pellston Public Schools, all three candidates for four-year terms were elected. James Milbrandt got 252 votes, John Ritter got 140 votes and Kathy Smith got 266 votes. Voters also defeated a proposed 0.75-mill tax increase for four years to create a building and site sinking fund. The defeated levy would have generated about $200,000 in the first year, but only 185 voters agreed and 208 voted against the measure.

Voters in Harbor Springs Public Schools approved by a 660 to 214 tally a requested renewal for a one-year 13.99-mill tax levy on non-homestead property. Voters also approved a second proposal for a five-year, 0.66-mill tax increase for a site sinking and building fund for general district repair and improvement. That vote result was 491 in favor and 386 opposed. There were two candidates elected to the board of education, including Gary Morse with 557 votes and Laurie Wendland with 574 votes. Candidate Tom Gallagher had 458 votes.

A write-in candidate was elected to one of two four-year school board terms in Alanson-Littlefield Public Schools. Stephanie Baldwin earned 119 handwritten votes and candidate Jason Tanner got 167 votes. Candidate Kenneth England had 102 votes. Voters approved a proposal to renew for one year an 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property by a vote of 167 to 54.

All three candidates were elected who ran for three six-year terms on the Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District Board. Robert Anderson got 3,036 votes, Jay Essenberg got 2,957 votes and Mary Jason got 3,184.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY

Kingsley Area Schools voters rejected by a 912 to 354 tally a request to approve an additional 3 mills for 20 years to borrow $16.5 million to build a new middle school, construct an addition to the high school, improve educational technology, and improve play and athletic fields.

Beth Lajko received 848 votes and Michelle J. Quigley-Gomez garnered 849 votes to win two seats on the Kingsley school board.

KALKASKA COUNTY

Kalkaska County voters approved requests for funding for Kalkaska's hospital and a combined request to fund recycling and animal control.

The Kalkaska County Hospital Authority asked for 1.6 mills to fund hospital expansion and remodeling, a project to include a new building for assisted living and an addition for expanded outpatient services. The millage will replace a 1.7 mill measure that expired and is expected to raise $1,120,856 in its first year. Voters approved that measure 1,791 to 732.

Voters agreed 2,020 to 503 to approve .25 mills to fund animal control and recycling programs in the county.

Michael Gaylord and James Peters Jr., won the two seats on the Kalkaska school board. Gaylord received 773 votes, Peters 813, and candidate Donna Wednieski 757.

Voters denied Forest Area Schools' request for up to 2.55 mills to pay for the financing of a $6,160,000 bond the school district would use to improve technology, erect an addition or additions, remodel existing school buildings and improve the playground. That measure was rejected 495 to 330.

LEELANAU COUNTY

In Bingham Township, Ross Ard ran without party affiliation and received 404 votes to defeat Republican Richard Schmuckal, who earned 320 votes for township supervisor. Ard will fill the remainder of the term that expires in November 2008 and was left vacant by the recall of former Supervisor Robert Foster.

Voters in Bingham and Suttons Bay townships approved a 2.3-mill, three-year tax to fund fire protection and emergency services. The measure won 470 to 198 in Suttons Bay and 486 to 247 in Bingham.

In the race for the Leland Public School board, Alan Hartwick received 323 votes and Maynard Wheeler earned 292 votes to win two four-year terms, followed by Susan Abbott Schmidt with 234 votes. Voters also approved two ballot proposals. The first, to renew for 2007 the district's non-homestead property tax levy of 10.9 mills, received 388 yes votes and 110 no votes. A 0.3-mill, three-year levy to create a sinking fund for the repair of school buildings and grounds was approved 320 to 177.

At Northport Public School, Jeffrey Dyer earned 257 votes to defeat Robert Zwemer, who received 160 votes for a partial board term ending in June 2008.

Bonnie Shiner garnered 315 votes and Denise Sica earned 199 votes to win two four-year board terms. Other candidates were Patty DeYoung with 174 votes, Todd Huck with 112 votes, Chris Irvine with 33 votes, and Bradley Trolenberg with 46 votes.

In Suttons Bay Public Schools, Roger Merriman received 981 votes and Thomas Nixon garnered 971 votes to win two four-year terms on the school board.

Jeff Smith was the only candidate for a four-year term on the board of Glen Lake Community School and received 112 votes.

MANISTEE COUNTY

Write-in candidate Mark Mullett secured 156 votes and Terri Alkire Schmidt received 194 votes to win two seats on the board of Bear Lake Schools. Candidate Keith Teachout had 71 votes.

In Kaleva Norman Dickson Schools, Dan Kerwin and Daniel Holtz won the two board seats with 85 and 79 votes, respectively.

In Onekama Consolidated Schools, Sally Koon and Tom McCraner won two board terms, with 293 and 247 votes, respectively. Voters renewed for three years the district's 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property by a margin of 284-47.

Clara Vargo and James Jensen won two spots on the board of West Shore Community College. Election totals for that race from Manistee and other counties tallied 2,815 votes for Jensen; 2,669 votes for Vargo; and 2,470 votes for Judy McLain.

Thomas Williams and Valarie Bergstrom won two seats in the board race for Manistee Area Public Schools, with 410 votes and 451 votes, respectively. Candidate Melissa Waitner received 290 votes.

MISSAUKEE COUNTY

In Lake City Area Schools, Vianna Lynne Burns received 1,457 votes and Julieann Cebulski garnered 1,295 votes to win two four-year terms on the school board. Voters rejected 1,110-808 a request to borrow up to $18.3 million for a K-5 elementary school, playgrounds, technology and site development and improvement. A proposal to renew for one year the district's 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property was approved 1,190-727.

At McBain Rural Agricultural School, Dean Smallegan earned 135 votes to defeat Denise Gilde, who received 24 votes for one four-year board seat. Phil Gilde received 152 votes to win a partial term that will expire in June 2010. A one-year renewal of the district's 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property was approved 128-29.

OTSEGO COUNTY

Voters approved an operating millage renewal proposal in Otsego County for Gaylord Community Schools in an 824 to 325 vote. The measure asked to continue to levy for three years the tax rate of 18 mills. The millage will be levied in 2007 and the district will collect approximately $10.4 million. The existing tax rate expired in 2006.

The only candidate seeking election to the Gaylord Community Schools Board of Education picked up 918 votes. William O'Neill, the current board vice-president, will serve another four years.

Two incumbents on the Vanderbilt Area Schools Board of Education were re-elected, each to four-year terms. Bernie Matelski, board president, got 108 votes and Carrie Snyder, board secretary, got 110 votes. Challenger Tom Serino had 59 votes. A fourth candidate, Carmen Bartlomiej, was elected to a partial term ending in June 2008 with 125 votes.

WEXFORD COUNTY

Voters in the Manton Consolidated School district renewed an 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property by a count of 295 to 93. They also elected Luther D. Lovell and Teresa Skiver to the school board.

Candidates who ran for the two spots and their vote totals are: Timothy H. Taylor,134; Luther D. Lovell, 219; James E. Ritchie Jr.,101; Teresa Skiver, 170; and Randy P. Sucharski, 119.

In the Mesick Consolidated Schools district, Amy Oram and James Humphreys were elected to two spots on the board. Oram received 135 votes, Humphreys 136 and candidate Kelly Squier 100. Amy Lipke received 168 votes and was the lone candidate for a partial term on the school board.

Buckley Community Schools district voters renewed the 18-mill tax levy on non-homestead property by a margin of 110-46. Lewis Chalker received 132 votes and was the only one candidate running for a spot on the school board.
