Norse claim 3rd straight region

Cadillac, Harbor Light also on to quarterfinals

GAYLORD — Suttons Bay won its third straight regional title with its sixth consecutive win over Kingsley this season.

The Norse defeated Rogers City 25-10, 25-16, 12-25, 25-23 in the semifinal before topping the Stags 20-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-10.

"I've got to hand it to Rogers City — we played perfect volleyball for two games and then they came back,” Suttons Bay coach Mike Kelly said. "Kingsley made us really play well to beat them.”

The Norse play in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Kalkaska against Iron Mountain (30-1).

Maggie Walters set the school single-season kills record with 636, eclipsing the previous mark set by Holly Orban's 621 last year. Walters had 47 kills and 7 blocks on Saturday.

Other leading performances by Norse players Saturday included Anna Pryor (19 digs, 85 assists, 2 aces), Kelsey Wick (39 kills, 3 blocks, 12 digs, 19-19 serving), Charlotte Stowe (10 kills, 6 blocks, 28 digs), Fran Belanger (39-39 serving, 3 kills, 21 digs, 2 aces), Crystal Dittrich (39-39 serving, 20 digs) and Jessie Pavelek (17 digs).

Suttons Bay had a perfect 6-0 mark against Kingsley this season, part of a 54-12-2 record. The Norse connected on 97 percent of their serves on the day, and have a 96 percent rate for the season.

Kingsley defeated Whittemore-Prescott 18-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-21 in its opening match.

Senior Angela Bodjack — the only senior on the team — led the way with 16 kills and 37 digs. Other top contributors included Brittany Denter (51 assists, 7 kills, 22 digs), Jessie Emery (12 kills, 26 digs), Kali Weber (16 kills, 5 blocks), Amanda Ocobock (12 kills, 8 assists, 5 blocks) and Tallie Waurzyniak (47 digs).

The Stags finish the season 40-20-5.

CLASS B

Cadillac claims first volleyball regional title

In its third trip to volleyball regionals, Cadillac claimed its first title with a 25-13, 18-25, 25-16, 25-16 triumph over Gladstone.

Cadillac (33-17-2) will advance to Tuesday's quarterfinal at Petoskey against Mason County Central.

"We were serving very well, we kept the ball in play and we had some big hits,” Cadillac coach Michelle Brines said. "But we don't have any stars. We just have a lot of Steady Eddies that just go out and do the job.”

Cadillac swept Pinconning 26-24, 25-12, 25-11 to reach the final.

Liz Foltz had 31 kills, nine blocks and 24 digs and Kristen Agren 18 kills, 49 digs, 37 assists and nine aces. Darcy Gehrke added 16 kills, four blocks and six digs and Rachel Risch seven kills, 38 assists and 28 digs.

Jessie Donahue contibuted 11 kills and 13 digs, Abby DeWitt seven kills and four blocks, Lisa Wohlford 44 kills and Amy Salasky 31 digs.

CLASS A

Forest Hills Central 3
TC West 1

Traverse City West lost 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22 to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central in the semifinals of the Class A regional at Muskegon Reeths-Puffer.

No. 1 ranked East Kentwood claimed the title with a 3-0 victory (25-6, 25-19, 25-19) over Forest Hills Central

The Falcons also swept Holland West Ottawa (28-26, 25-16, 25-21) in the opener.

Forest Hills will play in the quarterfinal at Mount Pleasant.

CLASS C

North Muskegon 3
McBain 0

McBain lost 3-0 to eventual champion North Muskegon in the first round of the Class C regional at Montabella.

North Muskegon stopped the Ramblers 25-17, 25-18, 25-9 before topping Morley-Stanwood 25-12, 27-25, 25-19 in the final.

Morley-Stanwood advanced with a 26-28, 25-15, 25-22, 17-25, 15-9 triumph over St. Louis.

North Muskegon plays in the Morley-Stanwood quarterfinal.

CLASS D

Harbor Light makes fourth trip to quarterfinals

Harbor Light Christian advanced to the quarterfinals for the fourth straight season with a 3-0 victory over Onaway in the final of the Class D regional at Johannesburg-Lewiston.

Harbor Light will play in Tuesday's quarterfinal in Engadine against Crystal Falls Forest Park.

Harbor Light reached the final with a 3-0 victory over Pickford. Onaway topped Hillman 3-1 to advance.
