KALKASKA Kingsley and Kalkaska opened the Class C district basketball tournament with wins on Monday night at Kalkaska High School. The Stags (15-6) defeated Northwest Conference rival Suttons Bay 55-44, then the host Blazers (7-14) followed with a 59-40 win over Glen Lake. Up next for Kingsley is Traverse City St. Francis on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. "Every game to this point has been a new step for us, said Stags coach Dennis Schaar. "We wanted to win the conference (and did), then we wanted to win our first district game. We just want to keep taking steps. Three Kingsley took a step in the right direction Monday, breaking a 10-10 tie with a 12-4 second-quarter run. The Stags led 35-27 at the end of the third. Leading the way were Rob Zenner (17 points), Brian Bott (13 points, eight rebounds) and Dan Worm (10 points). Kingsley was 17-for-21 at the free throw. Cale Forton scored 30 of Suttons Bay's 44 points. He had 24 of the team's 30 points in the second half. Kalkaska's victory over Glen Lake was sparked by Chris Keller's15 points and seven rebounds. Marc Wallace and John Kasza each had 12 points, with Wallace adding a half dozen assists. Alex Swoverland contributed seven rebounds. "It was a good win because it's at home, Kalkaska coach David Manchester said. "I could tell the kids really didn't want to lose this one. Andrew White led the Lakers with 17 points and Ryan Dyksterhouse added 10. Glen Lake led early on, but the Blazers took control after the second quarter. The Blazers (7-14) play Forest Area on Wednesday at 8 p.m.
