Orr lifts the Bums past Gateway

Bums let early lead, but not the win, get away

SAUGET, Ill. — Sam Orr's big day at the plate helped the Traverse City Beach Bums win their second straight game, 6-5 over the Gateway Grizzlies on Tuesday night.

Orr was 3 for 4 with three RBIs in the contest for Traverse City (12-15).

The final hit by Orr was the biggest, a RBI double in the top of the ninth inning to break a 5-5 tie. Orr drove in Lance Koenig, who had reached base when he was hit with a pitch.

The Bums took a 4-0 lead, including a pair in the first inning.

Justin Holmes started the rally with a one-out double and came around to score on a RBI triple by Jeff Vincent. Curtis Ledbetter drove in Vincent with a single.

A pair of home runs, the first of the season for each player, gave Traverse City the 4-0 advantage. Orr had the first home run in the fifth inning while Zack Kalter went deep in the sixth.

Gateway tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of home runs, the final of which was a three-run shot by Mike Breyman.

TC took a 5-4 advantage in the top of the eighth inning on an error. But the Grizzlies came right back to tie the contest on a Dustin Roberts homer.

That set the stage for Orr's heroics in the ninth.

Jeff Williams (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the Bums in relief of starter Ryan Gehring. Nick Pepper came on to pick up his third save.

The same two teams play two more games at Gateway. Today's contest is at 8:05 p.m. while Thursday is an afternoon contest.
