Animals hit the catwalkCategories include 'Best Ensemble' and 'Pet and Owner Look-Alike'Special to the Record-Eagle
National Cherry Festival Pet Show judge Phyllis Gerhardt reacts to the Hawaiian outfit of Banjo, owned by Molly Pachulski, in the best dressed contest. TRAVERSE CITY Contestants spent anywhere from 30 minutes to six days preparing for this year's Cherry Festival Pet Show. "This morning was a little crazy, Charlotte Drumm, 6, said. Charlotte, 65 pounds, entered the competition dressed as "Shaggy, along with her 155-pound Great Dane, Joe, dressed as Scooby-Doo for the "Best Ensemble category. The category of "Best Ensemble had everything from "Goldie Locks and the Three Bears, to "Picking Guinea Pig Cherries, and "The Hamster Drive-in complete with popcorn bags full of seeds by Susie Ness, Sophie Vanderbosch, and hamsters Taffy and Carmel. Even cats participated including one very fat cat, Moe. "We have two cats and she eats both bowls of food, Chloe Seymour, 13, said. "We had to shove her in the kennel this morning. One of the most unusual pets competing was a bearded dragon, shown by Taylor and Nick Featherstone. "She's the friendliest lizard; she likes to cuddle more than puppies, Taylor said. Taking first in the "Pet and Owner Look-Alike contest was Emily Becker, 7, and her dog Rocky. Emily spray-painted her blond hair black, wore face paint to mirror Rocky, and bought two Cherry Festival T-shirts, one fit for a puppy. Rebecca Stagman, 11, and her dogs Duke and Janie, a PetSafe dog, won "Best Dressed. The two dogs were dressed as a bride and groom wearing real human clothes. "We got our idea and started going through Dad's closet, Stagman said. "We will take the dogs to Bardon's for ice cream cones; they deserve it. Since no one entered the "Ugliest Mutt competition, Cherry Festival Queen Kaley Schroeder chose two pug dogs, Rosie and Buster, out of the crowd. Dannielle McGuire and her son Samuel, 3, proudly walked the dogs up to the stage. "They're so ugly, they're cute, Dannielle said. "We love them; they are just little clowns, little human beings. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
