White picks up goal for No. 1 Notre Dame

TRAVERSE CITY — Justin White's second helped the Notre Dame hockey team hold on to No. 1.

White, a sophomore forward from Traverse City West, netted his second goal of the season Friday to help the Irish beat Nebraska-Omaha 4-2.

White's tally on the power play came 11:02 into the third period and tied the game at 2-2. Notre Dame (24-5-3) improved to 18-3-3 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Notre Dame, 5-0-2 in its last seven games, battled to a 2-2 tie with Omaha on Saturday night.

For the season, White has two goals and six assists in 19 games. He's a plus-7 this season for the Irish.

• The Northern Michigan University women's track team won the NMU Northern Challenge track meet held at the Superior Dome in Marquette on Saturday.

Freshman Karin Diebold (Ellsworth) was first in the pole vault by clearing 10-feet, tying her own Wildcats' record.

Michaela Harris (TC West) was third in the 1600 (5:27.14) and seventh in the 800 (2:27.51). In the 3,000, junior Danielle Stein (Kalkaska) was fourth (10:58.76) and sophomore Danielle deJong (Petoskey) 14th (12:52.46).

• The Calvin College women's basketball team won three games last week to improve to 21-1 overall and 14-0 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Calvin capped the week with a 63-58 overtime win against rival Hope College on Saturday.

Junior guard Nikki Zimmerman (TC West) had six points, three assists, two rebounds and one steal against Hope. Zimmerman added three points, five assists, two rebounds, one block and one steal in Wednesday's 58-44 victory over Tri-State and 11 points, one assist and one steal in a 75-44 rout of Saint Mary's on Monday.

In Hope's loss to Calvin, senior guard Sarah Jurik (Mesick) had nine points, two rebounds and two steals while junior center Lindsay Lange (Manistee) added four points, three rebounds, one block and one steal. Jurik had 11 points and one block and Lange seven points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist as Hope (19-3, 11-3) beat Olivet 78-70 on Wednesday.

• The Ivy League basketball schedule again proved unkind to Brown University.

The Bears fell to 2-6 in the Ivy League and 7-16 overall with a 77-68 loss at Columbia on Saturday.

Junior guard Damon Huffman (Petoskey) did drain four 3-pointers to finish with 20 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Sophomore forward Scott Friske (Charlevoix) added two points and two rebounds.

In a 61-59 loss at Cornell on Friday, Huffman had 11 points, five rebounds and four assists. Friske had two assists, one block and one steal.

• Fifth-year senior co-captain Katie Erdman (Cadillac) placed 10th in the mile with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:46.75 for the University of Michigan women's track team at the Tyson Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas.

Erdman also ran the anchor leg on the sixth-place 1600 relay (3:42.95).

Freshman Sarah Conkle (Bellaire) tied for 18th while Kelly Catino (TC Central) was 24th in the pole vault, both clearing 11'7”. Freshman Alisha Cole (Cadillac) was 57th in the preliminaries in the 200 (25.07).

• Sophomores Cassidy Edwards (Glen Lake) and Andrew Wagner (TC Christian) posted a pair of top-five finishes for the Middlebury (Vt.) College ski teams.

Middlebury was third overall among the 12 teams at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.

Edwards was fifth in the 15K classic (53:08.4) and posted the best time among three nordic skiers in the 3x5 freestyle relay team that placed second.

Wagner was third in Friday's slalom (1:39.88) and fifth in Saturday's slalom (1:36.89) for the Middlebury alpine team.

• Western Michigan University freshman forward Jenny Loney (Benzie Central) had a career-high eight points in the Broncos' 61-48 loss to Buffalo on Wednesday.

Loney also had a block for WMU (10-15, 3-8 Mid-American Conference).

Loney had two points, two rebounds and one assist in a 90-68 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday.

• The Aquinas College men's basketball team won its seventh straight game with a 75-65 win over Davenport University.

Junior guard Jeff Wierzbicki (Elk Rapids) had nine points, 10 rebounds, one assist and one steal and freshman guard Matt McDonald (Cadillac) two points, two steals and one assist for the Saints (18-9, 10-1 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference).

Wierzbicki had four points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist and McDonald two points and two boards in a 65-47 defeat of Concordia on Wednesday.

• Freshman Megan Hoblet (Cadillac) continued to shine for the Alma College women's basketball team.

Hoblet had 20 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks in Alma's 76-72 loss to Olivet on Saturday.

In a 69-65 victory over Adrian on Wednesday, Hoblet had 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for the Scots (10-11, 6-8 MIAA).

• Wayne State University senior Bethany Mesko (TC Central) has been voted to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District women's basketball third team.

Mesko, an accounting major, has been named to the Wayne State Athletic Director's Honor Roll all seven semesters including five semesters with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

She has missed the last seven games with an injury. All four of her games in double figures this season came against GLIAC opponents.

• Senior Lauren Fewins (TC St. Francis) nearly had a pair of double-digit scoring games for Hillsdale College.

Fewins had nine points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal as the Chargers improved to 15-7 and 10-4 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 67-65 victory over Mercyhurst on Saturday.

Fewins had 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in a 92-72 loss to Gannon on Thursday.

• Hillsdale College freshman Katie Christiansen (Glen Lake) placed in two events at Saturday's Eastern Michigan University Classic Invitational.

Christiansen was fifth in the triple jump and eighth in the long jump.

• Brothers Luke and Andy Bronkema (McBain) each had 12 points as Cornerstone University topped Madonna 86-63 on Saturday.

A senior forward, Andy Bronkema added eight rebounds, two assists and one steal while Luke, a junior forward, added one assist and one rebound for Cornerstone (18-8, 9-2 WHAC).

Guard Corbin Donaldson (Petoskey) added six points, two assists and one rebound for the Eagles. Senior guard Adam Kerfoot (Gaylord St. Mary) had three points and four rebounds for Madonna.

Andy Bronkema had 23 points, four rebounds and three assists and Luke Bronkema 11 points in a 96-79 victory over Siena Heights on Thursday.

• Freshman Jill Walton (Kingsley) had eight points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block as Lake Superior State (16-7, 11-4 GLIAC) beat Northern Michigan 59-50 on Thursday.

Junior Maria Kasza (Kalkaska) had 13 points, two steals and one assist for Northern (8-17, 4-12).

Both LSSU and the Wildcats lost on Saturday.

Kasza had seven points, four steals, two rebounds and two assists in Northern's 70-65 loss to Ferris State.

Walton had three points, two rebounds and one assist for the Lakers in a 74-61 defeat against Michigan Tech.

• The Wesleyan (Conn.) University basketball team dropped a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference games last weekend.

Senior guard Jimmy Shepherd (Charlevoix) had 11 points and two rebounds in Saturday's 80-65 loss to Williams College. Shepherd had five points and one steal in a 64-58 loss to Middlebury.

The Cardinals are 7-16 and 2-7 in the NESCAC.

• Davenport University took over first place in the WHAC women's basketball race with a 50-48 triumph over Aquinas on Saturday.

Sophomore Lynne Blomberg (Harbor Springs) had 15 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal for Davenport (22-6, 10-2 WHAC).

Blomberg had 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists in a 98-79 victory over the Indiana Institute of Technology on Wednesday.

• The Lake Superior State University men's basketball team had a pair of double-digit losses in the GLIAC.

LSSU (8-16, 5-10 GLIAC) lost 63-53 to Michigan Tech on Saturday and 73-64 to Northern Michigan on Thursday.

Sophomore guard Mark Morse (Harbor Springs) had 12 points, eight rebounds and one steal on Saturday. He had 17 points, three assists and two rebounds against Northern.

• The North Greenville (S.C.) men's basketball team split a pair of games last week, mirroring the Crusaders' season.

North Greenville (11-11) lost 103-77 to Wingate on Wednesday as freshman Austin Randel (McBain) had five points, two assists and three rebounds. Randel had 14 points, three rebounds and one steal in an 82-71 victory over Lees-McRae on Monday.

• The DePaul University women's basketball team split a pair of Big East games, losing 78-70 at Notre Dame on Sunday and beating South Florida 72-65 on Tuesday.

Junior forward Erin Carney (TC St. Francis) had three points, six rebounds and two steals in the loss to Notre Dame. Carney had four points, six boards, five assists and one steal in the win by DePaul (15-10, 5-7 Big East).

• Mid-Central College Conference co-leaders Huntington University handed Spring Arbor a 72-54 defeat on Tuesday.

Freshman guard Richard Blair (Pellston) had eight points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals for Spring Arbor (16-12, 4-10 MCC). Senior forward Scott Parrish (Charlevoix) added five points, 10 rebounds and one assist.

• Junior guard Shawnesy Patton (Central Lake) is averaging five points a game for the women's basketball team at William Jessup University (Calif.).

• The University of Michigan women's basketball team fell to 10-15 and 3-9 in the Big Ten with a 66-49 loss at Iowa on Thursday.

Freshman guard Kalyn McPherson (TC West) had four points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist for the Wolverines.
