Titans sweep Blue Devils in league opener

Traverse City West opened Big North Conference volleyball play Monday with a 25-10, 25-4, 25-6 win over Gaylord.
The Titans were led by Jessica Oakley (7 kills, 8 digs, 4 blocks, 8 aces), Jordan Davenport (6 kills, 6 digs), Margeaux Raymond (5 kills, 6 digs, 3 blocks), Lydia Lovejoy (25 assists), Sierra Breithaupt (4 kills, 3 blocks), Megan Montgomery (4 digs, 5 aces) and Gaby Muller (3 kills).
The Titans won the JV match 25-9, 25-13, 25-12 behind the play of Kelly Flynn (8 aces), Emily Ellison (5 aces), Gabby Corwin and Gina Taylor.
The West freshmen swept, too, 25-21, 25-10, 25-16. The Titans were sparked by Jessica Harding (5 aces, 4 assists, 3 digs), Kristina Green (5 aces, 3 assists), Taylor Pahl (2 kills, 3 aces, 2 digs) and Kelsey Wagner (2 aces).

Petoskey opened its Big North Conference volleyball schedule with a 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 sweep over Traverse City Central.
The host Trojans fell to 0-1 in the BNC and 6-2 overall heading into Thursday's Cadillac Invitational.
Pacing Central were Maddie Lagina (12 assists, 3 kills) and Meredith Aja (3 kills).
Petoskey also swept the JV match.
TC Central's freshmen were victorious, 2-1.
TC Christian finishes 2-0-1 in quad
Traverse City Christian finished 2-0-1 in a quad at Pine River.
The Warriors split with Kalkaska (25-22, 18-25) and beat Pine River (25-16, 25-19) and Forest Area (25-14, 27-25).
The Sabres were led by Anne Friedlander (23 of 24 serving with 6 aces, 7 digs, 11 kills, 20 assists), Joni Yahr (10 of 11 serving, 13 kills, 3 blocks), Lindsay Kostrezwa (27 of 29 serving with 6 aces, 8 digs, 16 kills, 2 blocks), Arielle Kanitz (7 kills) and Meghan Terpstra (37 of 39 serving).
Forest Area split with Pine River (12-25, 25-14) and Kalkaska (20-25, 25-23). The Warriors were paced by Kayla Helsel (25 of 25 serving, 22 assists, 10 digs), Kathryn Hodges (18 of 19 serving, 9 digs), Dani Orr (10 kills, 5 blocks), Chelesea Snyder (11 digs, 10 kills, 7 aces), Cassie Magee (8 digs, 11 of 12 serving), Allie Garrett (7 assists) and Molly Lockwood (7 digs).
Doubles power Central to tournament title
Traverse City Central won all four doubles flights to capture the Saginaw Heritage Invitational.
The Trojans finished with 21 points, edging Grand Blanc by two points for the top spot. Heritage was third with five points with Mount Pleasant fourth with three.
Winning all three matches in straight sets were Jack Milliken/Ben Watts at No. 1, Harry Malone/Riley Chadwell at No. 2, Glover Kosch/Hunter Bergsma at No. 3, Michael Leigh/Dan Spencer at No. 4.
Doug Burke won No. 2 singles, also with three straight-set victories.
Winning two matches for the Trojans were Fisher Sutherland at No. 1 singles, Spencer Powell at No. 3 and Ethan Weckstein at No. 4.
Suttons Bay 4
Northport 2
Suttons Bay rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to defeat Northport 4-2.
Blaine Fritz scored two goals, while Jason McKisson added a goal and two assists and Shane MacDonald a goal and an assist.
Mack Jones was the winning goalie for the Norsemen (3-1).
Ryan Blessing paced Northport (0-1) with a goal and an assist. Christian Gonchez also scored, while Shane Detweiler assisted on Blessing's goal.
The Wildcats host the Traverse City West junior varsity today.
Glen Lake 5
TC Christian 2
Zach Hawkins scored four goals and assisted on a fifth to spark Glen Lake to a 5-2 win over Traverse City Christian.
Andy Wichtoski added a goal and an assist. Aaron King had three assists. Ryan Black had nine saves for the Lakers (3-2).
Scotty Raetz netted two goals for Christian. Jason Send assisted on both.
Forest Area 3
Bellaire 2
Marco Martinez scored the game-winning goal as Forest Area edged Bellaire 3-2 in a Northern Michigan Soccer League game.
Brandon Rookus and Sam Runkel also tallied for the Warriors (2-2). Eric Dawson and Spencer Neuman tallied for Bellaire.
Benzie Central 6
Mason Cty. Eastern 3
Benzie Central improved to 3-0 with a 6-3 soccer victory over Mason County Central.
Leading the Huskies, who host Glen Lake in their Northwest Conference opener, were Andrew Addis (2 goals, 2 assists), Adam Worden (2 goals, assist), Noah Hahn (goal, 2 assists) and Ian VanDeperre (goal).
Steve Smendzvik was the winning goalie.
Harbor Springs 8
East Jordan 0
Harbor Springs erupted for five first-half goals and cruised to an 8-0 win over East Jordan.
Scoring details were not reported.
East Jordan goalkeeper Jordan Hagen made 22 saves.
TC Central girls host car wash Saturday
The Traverse City Central girls basketball team will hold its annual car wash fund raiser on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at Oak Park Elementary School.
There is a suggested $5 donation per car.
