08/26/2007TC Central captures its own invitationalWest dominates lague swim meetTRAVERSE CITY The hosts had the most when the six-team season-opening Traverse City Central Invitational concluded on Saturday. TC Central topped Leland 25-12, 25-12 in the final of the tournament. "It was a good start to the season, Central coach Tim Homa said. The Trojans opened pool play by beating Elk Rapids (25-10, 25-10), Glen Lake (25-12, 25-11) and Leland (25-8, 25-9) before losing to TC Christian (25-20, 13-25, 17-16) in the first meeting between the two schools. Central closed out pool play with a 25-6, 25-12 triumph over TC St. Francis before then beating the Glads 19-25, 25-9, 15-12 in the semifinals. Leading TC Central were Laura Spencer (25 blocks, 25 kills) and Maddie Lagina (79 assists, 26 aces). Spencer was returning after missing half of last season with an injury. Laura Stepke added 17 digs and 18 aces, Meredith Aja 24 kills and Janna Tucker 18 aces. Leland reached the final with a 25-20, 25-23 victory over TC Christian. That win avenged an earlier 26-24, 25-15 loss to the Sabres another first for TC Christian in pool play. The Comets also beat St. Francis (25-13, 25-22), Glen Lake (25-8, 25-12) and ElK Rapids (25-13, 25-14) in pool play. Erica Breen had 33 kills, 29 digs, five blocks and six aces to pace Leland. Juliana Lisuk added 14 kills, six blocks and eight aces and Erin Sneed 10 kills, 40 assists, 17 digs and six aces. Molly Harrison chipped in with 33 assists, seven digs and four aces. In pool play the Glads went 3-2 with a losses to Leland and TC Central and wins over TC Christian (25-22, 23-25, 15-8), Elk Rapids (25-17, 25-21) and Glen Lake (27-25, 25-15). St. Francis was led by sophomores Lyndsay LaCourse (19 kills, eight digs, 10 blocks, 33 for 36 serving, four aces) and Abby Clear (13 kills, six digs, six blocks). Marley Martin added 12 kills, seven digs and three blocks, Katie Miller seven kills, 10 digs and three blocks and Kelsey Schmuckal eight kills, two blocks, 19 for 22, six aces. In addition to its big wins, TC Christian also beat Glen Lake (25-6, 25-21) and lost to St. Francis and Elk Rapids (23-25, 25-22, 15-12) in pool play. Annie Friedlander finished the tourney with 25 kills, 38 assists, 19 digs and 11 aces while Lindsay Kostrezwa added 30 kills, 20 digs and eight blocks. Kara Romstadt contributed 39 assists, 12 digs and 10 aces and Joni Yahr 23 kills and four blocks. "We had some ups and downs, but overall it was a good first day of volleyball, TC Christian coach Russ Hansen said. Glen Lake (0-5) had a tough day, losing to Elk Rapids (18-25, 25-21, 8-15), TC Central, Leland, St. Francis and TC Christian. The Lakers were led by Dani Frost with seven kills, six aces, four blocks, seven digs; Heather Flowers with four aces, five digs, 17 assists; Rachelle Brzezinski with five aces, 13 digs, three kills; Mandy Brown with five kills, five aces, three blocks; and Natalie Flowers with six aces, 11 digs. MORE VOLLEYBALL Kingsley goes 2-1-2 at Pellston InvitationalKingsley posted a 2-1-2 record at the Pellston Invitational, falling in the quarterfinals to Northwest Conference rival Suttons Bay. In pool play Kingsley split with Onaway (25-23, 21-25) and Harbor Springs (23-25, 25-21) and beat Alanson (25-10, 25-12) and Inland Lakes (25-12, 25-23). The Lady Stags dropped a 21-25, 25-16, 15-13 decision to the Norse. Brittney Denter had 82 assists, five kills and was 31 for 33 serving with three aces. Jesse Emery added 13 kills, 22 digs and was 32 for 35 with six aces. Also contributing were Amanda Ocobock (16 kills, 24 for 25, 22 digs), Mary Kaleita (15 kills, 36 for 36, 24 digs), Tallie Waurzyniak (55 digs, 22 for 24, three aces), Kali Weber (16 kills, six blocks) and Evie Wyse (seven kills, 11 for 12, two blocks). Bear Lake captures title at Northport Invitational Bear Lake took home top honors from the Northport Invitational. Onekama was second with the host Wildcats third. Grand Traverse Academy claimed fourth place. SWIMMING TC West claims first at Coastal ConferenceTraverse City West won seven of the 10 events to dunk the rest of the field at the Coastal Conference Relays. The Titans finished with 118 points while Ludington was second with 98. TC Central was fifth with 34 points. Winning the 400 medley relay for West were Sarah Brunner, Shelby Newhouse, Amy Brunner and Shea Williams in 4:18.51. Sarah Roper, Shelby Newhouse, Jane Hinsenkamp and Erin Holstad took the 200 breaststroke (2:19.61) and Amy Brunner, Sarah Brunner, Paige Rogers and Jordan Newhouse the 200 butterfly (1:59.24). Elyse Schultz, Jordan Newhouse, Roper and Williams took the 400 individual medley (4:36.99); Paige Keith, Hinsenkamp, Schultz and Holstad the 500 crescendo (5:13.63); Schultz, Jordan Newhouse, Williams and Sarah Brunner the 200 medley (2:04.41); Amy Brunner, Shelby Newhouse, Roper and Holstad the 200 freestyle (1:49.09). TC West is at Jenison on Thursday. SOCCER Norseman capture Harbor Springs tourneySuttons Bay finished 2-0-1 Saturday to win the four-team Harbor Springs Soccer Cup. The Norsemen tied Harbor Springs 1-1 and beat Glen Lake 3-2 and Sault Ste. Marie 6-0. Shane MacDonald scored off a Blaine Fritz assist to account for Suttons Bay's goal in the Harbor Springs match. The Rams scored late to tie it. The Norsemen rallied from a 2-0 deficit to down Glen Lake. MacDonald, Fritz and Jason McKisson scored in the comeback. MacDonald's goal came on a penalty kick. Fritz had an unassisted goal. Jesus Olivo drew the assist on McKisson's game-winner with about three minutes to go. Dustin Baker and Andy Wichtoski tallied for Glen Lake. Ryder Lewis had an assist. MacDonald's two goals and two assists sparked the win over Sault Ste. Marie. McKisson, Fritz, Sean Riley and Jonathan Herman added solo goals. Mack Jones was in goal for all three games. Glen Lake beat Sault Ste. Marie 2-1 as Wichtoski netted both goals. The Lakers finished the day with a 3-0 loss to Harbor Springs.
