Win No. 1 for Reed at Benzie Central

BENZONIA — The Matt Reed era at Benzie Central began with a victory on Friday night.

Quarterback Dan Loney ran for two scores and passed for another as the Huskies held off Comstock Park, 24-21.

Loney, who finished with 116 yards on the ground, had scoring runs of 12 and 4 yards. He also hit Jason Poet with a 22-yard touchdown pass.

Zach Corey kicked all three extra points for Benzie Central and also added a 22-yard field goal.

Each team scored seven points in the first two quarters. Benzie tallied 10 in the third quarter and Comstrock Park found the end zone for the final time in the closing minutes.

In addition to Loney, Tyler Gilbert added 64 yards rushing for Benzie. Shaun Coykendall led the Huskies on defense with 10 tackles while Josh Roelofs added seven stops and an interception.

Boyne City 34
McBain 0

Led by the rushing of Trever Kruzel and Robbie Jensen, Boyne City racked up 311 yards on the ground and opened its season with a 34-0 romp over McBain.

Kruzel gained 158 yards on 16 carries and scored on a 32-yard run, while Jensen was 7 for 125 and had touchdown runs of 60 and 58 yards to open the game. He also contributed a two-point conversion run.

Ryan Musser picked up a fumble and scampered 52 yards for a touchdown just before halftime to give Boyne a 21-0 lead.

Kelsey Noel followed Kruzel's TD run in the third quarter with a 1-yard scoring run of his own. Brendan Baic kicked two extra points.

Nick Simeri paced the Boyne City defense with nine tackles. Musser had eight tackles and a blocked punt in addition to his fumble recovery.

Linebacker Ty Hughston led McBain on defense.

Manistee 33
Ludington 27

Manistee ran for a school-record 507 yards on 40 carries en route to a 33-27 win over Ludington.

Reid Voorheis led Manistee with 268 yards on 20 carries while Conklin had 231 yards on 10 attempts. Voorheis had touchdown runs of 69, 83 and 50 yards while Conklin had scoring runs of 81 and 67 yards.

Tyler Van Allen led the Chippewas on defense with 10 tackles. Andrew Tighe added seven tackles and a sack.

Grayling 47
Roscommon 7

Ryan Cooper rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns as Grayling rolled to a 47-7 season-opening non-conference win over Roscommon.

Cooper scored on runs of 52, 1, 18 and 12 yards.

Quarterback Jimmy Osga completed 8 of 11 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns. The scoring strikes covered 62 and 40 yards to Isaac VanNuck, who finished with six receptions for 169 yards.

Tim VanNuck scored the other Vikings touchdown on an 8-yard run.

Jason Drudge kicked two field goals and six extra points.

Glen Lake 27
East Jordan 12

Ryan Dyksterhouse hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass and returned an interception 60 yards for a score as Glen Lake opened with a 27-12 non-conference win over East Jordan.

Dyksterhouse caught four passes for 119 yards. He also had 10 tackles on defense and averaged 42.2 yards on six punts.

Quarterback Nathan Sneed completed 8 of 16 passes for 181 yards for the Lakers. Joey Czapek led the rushing attack with 51 yards in nine carries. He had one touchdown.

John Bunek led the Lakers defensively with 15 stops. Jack Drow had two interceptions.

Kalkaska 28
Manton 6

Kalkaska rushed for 425 yards en route to a 28-6 non-conference win over Manton in Ted Collins' debut as Blazers coach.

Jeff Clark led the way, gaining 227 yards on 18 carries. He scored once. Corey Wilson added 113 yards on 19 carries. He scored twice. David Chalker contributed 85 yards and scored on a 53-yard jaunt.

Clark also intercepted two passes on defense. Tinkle led the team in tackles.

Frankfort 30
Marion 14

Kyle Brouillet scored three touchdowns and Scott Demerly rushed for 167 yards to lead Frankfort to a 30-14 victory over Marion.

Following Demerly's 8-yard TD run in the first quarter, Brouillet scored on a 4-yard run, a 75-yard pass from Wade Luxford and a 9-yard run.

Shawn Waara also hauled in a 12-yard TD pass from Luxford, who finished the game 5-for-7 for 97 yards. Luxford also rushed for 50 yards.

Max Banktson paced Frankfort's defense with 12 tackles, while Luxford picked off a pass.

Mesick 27
Manistee CC 6

Brandon Szegda and Ben Peltier combined to rush for 198 yards and three touchdowns as Mesick overcame seven turnovers to defeat Manistee Catholic Central, 27-6.

Szegda scored on an 8-yard run and Cody Wagatha kicked the extra point to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-6 at halftime. Peltier followed with a pair of 11-yard TD runs and also scored a two-point conversion.

Cody Simerson scampered 65 yards for Mesick's final touchdown.

Szegda had 13 carries for 100 yards, while Peltier was 16-for-98 and Brad Inman was 5-for-61.

Peltier and Inman each had 12 tackles and a sack.

St. Ignace 28
Charlevoix 21

St. Ignace thwarted a Charlevoix rally by batting down a fourth-down pass at its own 25 with less than two minutes remaining, beating the Rayders 28-21.

John Putman scored a pair of touchdowns for Charlevoix. He ran for a 14-yard TD and caught a 30-yard pass from Cliff Jones for another score.

Jones also ran for a 1-yard TD and kicked an extra point.

Kyle Jones rushed for 134 yards on 21 carries and contributed a two-point conversion.

Defensively, Jake Rankle had an interception and Nate Golovich recovered a fumble.

SKI VALLEY

Bellaire 42
Pellston 9

Ryan Hebden completed 13 of 21 passes for 238 yards and four touchdowns as Bellaire opened with a 42-9 Ski Valley win over Pellston.

Hebden and Brad Guy hooked up for three scores, covering 67, 10 and 9 yards. Guy finished with five catches for 136 yards. Chris Dewey snared a 26-yard scoring strike from Hebden.

Hebden also scored, sneaking in from a yard out before half to make it 21-0. Sean Payne also had a one-yard TD run. Kellen Warner kicked six extra points.

The Eagles finished with 390 total yards. Jared Rames caught four passes for 58 yards and rushed for another 41 yards. Chris Bueby led Bellaire with 54 yards on the ground.

Pellston scored on its first possession of the second half, marching 75 yards. Jason Zulski capped the drive with a one-yard run. Zulski also booted a 26-yard fourth quarter field goal.

Dakota Jones had nine tackles for Bellaire.

Central Lake 30
Johannesburg 6

The defending champions made a statement.

Central Lake, which lost three All-State players to graduation, opened its season with an impressive 30-6 Ski Valley Conference win over Johannesburg-Lewiston.

Landon Waller paced the Trojans. He rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown and returned an interception 45 yards for another score. Waller also had five tackles, including a sack.

Jarod Danbert and Travis Rogers added touchdown runs of 18 and 8 yards, respectively.

Quarterback Ryan Crawley completed 7 of 11 passes for 98 yards.

Rogers and Zach Light led the Trojan defense with 13 tackles apiece. Light had two sacks.

Forest Area 41
Inland Lakes 27

Justin Gordon and A.J. Freeman combined for 260 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Forest Area defeated Ski Valley rival Inland Lakes 41-27.

Gordon gained 150 yards, Freeman 110. Both scored twice.

Tyler Denike led the Warriors defensively with 14 tackles. Michael Mouton added 11.

JUNIOR VARSITY

Escanaba 22
TC Central 7

Escanaba scored 22 unanswered points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, to defeat Traverse City Central 22-7 in a junior varsity contest Friday.

Zachary Zoellner hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Mackenzie Sovereign to account for the Trojans' scoring.
