Greiners combine for 3 goals in Elks win

Sophomore John Greiner scored two goals off headers on corner kicks Thursday to spark Elk Rapids to a 6-2 soccer win over Suttons Bay.

Garrett Gribi also netted two goals for the Elks (1-1). Mike Greiner and Ian Sliger added solo goals.

Theo Stasch had three assists and Jaron Jandoc one for the Elks. Andy Caperton was in goal.

Blaine Fritz and Shane MacDonald tallied for the Norsemen. MacDonald and Cody Shumway picked up assists.

Elk Rapids plays at Midland on Saturday while Suttons Bay competes in a tournament at Harbor Springs.

Elk Rapids did not lose a game in three singles flights en route to a 4-2 win over Glen Lake.

Aaron Mayes, Max Bauer and Dan Werth all won 6-0, 6-0 in the first three singles flights. Neither team had a player at No. 4 singles.

Elk Rapids' Nick Viglione and Frank Israel won No. 3 doubles (6-3, 6-0).

Glen Lake's Mike McNeil and Matt Keim won No. 1 doubles (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) and Caleb Abbott and Jordan Fink No. 2 (6-1, 5-7, 6-1).

FOOTBALL

TC St. Francis JV 19
Suttons Bay JV 0

Ben Swann scored a pair of touchdowns as Traverse City St. Francis opened the season with a 19-0 shutout of Suttons Bay on Thursday.

Swann caught a 5-yard pass from Ian Sheldon in the third quarter and scored on an 8-yard run in the fourth to put the game away. Ronny Saunders kicked a PAT on the second of Swann's TDs.

Joey Kerridge struck in the first inning on a 4-yard TD run.

Luke Popp, Ben Schell, Swann and Kerridge were standouts on defense for the Gladiators (1-0).

Hudsonville JV 19
TC West JV 6

Hudsonville spoiled the Traverse City West JV opener, 19-6.

Jay Meyers scored on a 5-yard run for the Titans.

Anthony West paced the Titans, gaining 75 yards on 11 carries. Craig Wilson added 51 yards in 10 carries.

Adam Wicker, Steve Alpers, Meyers and West led the defense.

Leland 0

The Traverse City Central JV Black team defeated Leland 4-0 on Wednesday night.

Nick Armour scored two goals for the Trojans, with Jordan Detar and Brian Roddy each adding a goal. Neil Beauchamp and Mile Beauchamp each had assists.
