TC takes twinbill

Bums win third straight vs. Bolts

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — Tom Thornton and Tyler Meigs combined on a five-hit shutout as the Traverse City Beach Bums blanked the Windy City ThunderBolts 2-0 in the first game of a Frontier League doubleheader Tuesday night.

The Beach Bums (32-39) completed a sweep with a 5-1 victory in the second game of the twinbill, which was necessitated by a rain out on Monday night. Both games were only seven innings in length.

Thornton, a 6-foot-6 left-hander, notched his first victory since being signed by the Bums on July 26. In six innings, he allowed four hits and no walks while striking out three.

Meigs came on and worked a scoreless seventh to earn his fifth save.

Traverse City scored single runs in the fourth inning (on Aaron Garza's sacrifice fly) and the sixth (on Brad Vericker's third home run).

Vericker and Curtis Ledbetter each had two hits. Garza's 12-game hitting streak came to an end.
