Korson sparks Eagles to title

SUTTONS BAY — Colin Korson pitched five scoreless innings and had a key two-run double in the third inning to spark Lake Leelanau St. Mary to a 4-1 win over Suttons Bay in Saturday's championship game of the Leelanau Classic.

Korson, the tournament MVP, had two hits in the game. Shane Kaufman had a hit and an RBI for Suttons Bay.

St. Mary's rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth to edge Glen Lake 6-5 in its opener. Kienan Sutton's RBI double drove in the tying run. He later scored on an infield single by Ray Platts.

Matt Pasch picked up the win, allowing five hits. Michael Kalchik collected two hits and scored two runs for the Eagles.

Joe Galla's two hits and thee RBIs paced Glen Lake.

Suttons Bay reached the finals with a 15-5 win over Leland. Josh Feickert registered the win, allowing five hits and striking out eight. Feickert helped his own cause at the plate by driving in three runs. Anthony Stewart also drove in three runs while Dan Holmes had two hits and two RBIs and Bryan Belanger two RBIs.

Leland beat Glen Lake 7-3 in the consolation game.

The all-tournament team included St. Mary's Platts, Korson, Pasch and Kalchik; Suttons Bay's Holmes, Feickert and Stewart; and Glen Lake's Wes Buchan.

Trojans finish 1-1 in Rockford Invite

Traverse City Central split a pair of games en route to a second-place finish in the Rockford Invitational.

The Trojans (6-4) edged Grand Rapids Northview 4-3 in the opener as Ian Prokes doubled in Kevin Krantz with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Krantz had doubled earlier in the inning. Ted Groeneveldt earned the win in relief. Prokes had two doubles and three RBI. Krantz also had two doubles while Josh Pilarski contributed a hit and an RBI.

The Trojans fell to Grand Rapids Christian 10-9 in nine innings in the title game. Groeneveldt had three hits and scored four runs for Central. Prokes added three hits and three RBIs, Pilarski three hits and two RBIs, Krantz two hits and two RBIs and Jordan Hall two RBIs.

Titans drop two to Midland Chemics

Traverse City West dropped a doubleheader to Midland, losing the opener 9-3 and the nightcap 11-6.

Chad Braun paced West in game one with two hits and an RBI. John Purdy's two hits and three RBIs led the attack in game two. Joe Kligman and Chris Reed also drove in runs.

Rayders rally to beat Gaylord, win title

Charlevoix picked a good time to win its first two games.

The Rayders beat Boyne Falls 15-0 and Gaylord 8-7 to claim the Charlevoix Invitational.

Dan Waldron tossed three hitless innings in the win over Boyne Falls. He struck out eight. Jon Putman had two doubles, two RBIs and scored three runs. Cliff Jones scored four times.

The Rayders rallied from a 7-1 deficit after two innings to beat Gaylord in the title game. Chris Waha pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief. He struck out seven. JD Speigl had three hits, including two doubles. He drove in two. Jones, Waha and Waldron all added two hits. Waldron drove in three.

Gaylord advanced to the final with a 4-3 win over Cheboygan. The Chiefs beat Boyne Falls 16-1 for third.

Central Lake splits pair at wooden bat tourney

Central Lake rebounded from a loss to the host Rangers to beat Harbor Springs 11-3 in the consolation game of the Manton Wooden Bat Invitational.

Landon Waller had three hits and scored three runs while Brent Patton had three hits, two runs and two RBIs in Central Lake's win. Brian Cannon added two hits, two runs and three RBIs and Zach Light yielded just one earned run in six innings.

Central Lake opened with a 7-3 loss to Manton. Frank King and Waller had two hits for Central Lake (3-3).

SOFTBALL

Glen Lake blanks Norse in Leelanau Classic final

Winning pitcher Cori Kahler and Danielle Noonan combined on a no-hitter as Glen Lake shut out Suttons Bay 17-0 in the final of the Leelanau Classic.

Sabrina Galla had three RBIs and Erika Easter two for the Lakers (6-0). Shannon Galla, Kristen Pleva, Hannah Therrien, Katie Drzewiecki and Easter had two hits.

Noonan got the win and Kahler the save as Glen Lake opened with an 11-3 victory over Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.

Sabrina Galla (two RBIs) and Shannon Galla (RBI) had three hits and Lauren Pleva two.

Shannon (5 for 6, four runs, three RBIs) and Sabrina (4 for 5, five RBIs) were named co-MVPs of the tournament. They were joined on the all-tourney team by Noonan, Kahler and Lauren Pleva.

Frankfort doesn't allow a run in tournament games

Jenny Elliott tossed a one-hitter and struck out nine as Frankfort won its own invitational with a 3-0 victory over Sault Ste. Marie.

Bree Beyette and Elliott had two hits while Allison Webber and Noelle Fewins had doubles for the Panthers (6-0).

Elk Rapids won the consolation with a 9-0 victory over Mason County Eastern.

Fewins tossed a no-hitter and struck out five as Frankfort reached the final with a 10-0 triumph over Elk Rapids.

Nicole Marshall had a three-run homer while Elliott, Beyette and Webber had two hits.

Sault Ste. Marie reached the final with a 6-3 triumph over Mason County Eastern.

Gladiators go 0-3 in All Saints tourney

St. Francis suffered two 6-5 setbacks in the Bay City All Saints Invitational.

The Gladiators lost to host All Saints and to Tawas by 6-5 counts. Nikki Hastings took the loss in both games. Lyndsay LaCourse had two hits and two RBIs in the loss to All Saints. Hastings and Kristina Droste each contributed a hit and an RBI. LaCourse, Hastings, Droste Jill Kuhlman and Ayriel Mawby drove in runs in the loss to Tawas.

The Gladiators (2-3) also fell to Mount Pleasant 13-0.

North Muskegon prevails at Kingsley

Becca Shineldecker pitched North Muskegon to a 4-1 win over Kingsley in the finals of the Kingsley Invitational.

Kingsley (7-3) reached the title game with a 9-2 win over Forest Area. Amanda Worm earned the win. Nikki Fisher, Hillary Hoeflin and Courtney Stocking led the Kingsley hitting attack.

Kara Ponstein pitched a one-hitter as Kalkaska beat Forest Area 13-1 in the consolation game.

Katie Jones led the Blazers (3-1) with two hits and three RBIs. Megan Dunn, Marissa Taylor and Janelle Slater all added two hits. Dunn scored three runs, while Taylor and Slater drove in a run. Amber Huddleston had a three-run triple for the Blazers.

The Blazers lost to North Muskegon 3-2 in the opener. Taylor took the loss, despite pitching a three-hitter. Ponstein collected two hits for Kalkaska while Slater had a hit and an RBI.

The all-tournament team included Kingsley's Worm, Kali Weber, Alexa Bach; Kalkaska's Ponstein and Taylor; and Forest Area's Ashley Garret and Kayla Helsel.

Bellaire victorious in Manton tourney

Bellaire captured the Manton Invitational.

The Eagles beat the Rockford JV 9-1, lost to Harbor Springs 8-7 and then beat Manton 10-3.

Logan Edgecomb struck out seven in shutting down Rockford in the opener. Edgecomb also led the offense with four hits. Megan Comben and Amanda Shawl added three hits.

Edgecomb and Comben collected two hits apiece in the win over Manton. Shawl was the winning pitcher. She struck out five.

TC West 2
Mount Pleasant 1

Traverse City West remained undefeated with a 2-1 victory over Mount Pleasant.

Lauren Heindl and Marissa Wood-Sternbaugh scored for the Titans (4-0) on assists from Erica Olson and Becca Sage, respectively.

The only goal the Oilers got against keeper Emily Entz was on a penalty kick.

The TC West Green JV won 1-0 as Caitlyn Lynch headed in a cross from Sydney Johnson. Alyse Tucker and Taylor Ross combined on the shutout for West (3-1).

Suttons Bay finishes 1-0-1 at Ludington

Alyssa Korson scored one goal and assisted on another as Suttons Bay beat Ludington 2-0 in the Ludington Invitational.

Fran Belanger also tallied for the Norse. Kelsey Wick posted the shutout in goal.

Suttons Bay and Cadillac battled to a 0-0 tie later in the day. Wick was in goal for the Norse.

TENNIS

Central finishes third at Port Huron Invite

Traverse City Central finished third in the eight-team Port Huron Invitational.

Port Huron, ranked No. 5 in Division 1, won the tournament with 31 points. Detroit Catholic Central, ranked No. 7, took second with 21. Central had 11.

Central's Ben Watts and Jack Milliken were the runner-ups at No. 2 doubles. They won three of four matches.

Winning two matches were Doug Burke at No. 1 singles, Jamie Olson and Spencer Powell at No. 1 doubles and Glover Kosch and Jeff Byl at No. 4 doubles.

TC West Green wins JV tournament

The Traverse City West Green won seven of eight flights to capture a JV tennis tournament.

The Green finished with 23 points. Traverse City West Gold was second with 15. Harbor Springs and Traverse City Christian tied for third with 5.

Green flight winners included Zach Hughey, Andy Bezotte, Sean Lynes, Jacob Nestor and Dane Deemer, Dylan Deemer and Andy Farron, Tyler Ramsby and Trevor Kirt, and Tim DeYoung and Joel Collins.

The Gold's Mark Rapson won No. 2 singles.

TC Central Black claims JV Invitational crown

TC Central's Black JV team finished with 19 points to win the TC Central JV Invitational.

Cadillac was second with 13 followed by Glen Lake (12) and TC Central Gold JV (4).

Winning singles flights for Central were Billy Korreck at No. 1, Zak Miller at No. 2, Shawn Roach at No. 3 and A.J. Moehn at No. 4. Doubles flight winners for Central were Dan Spencer/Jake Overholt at No. 1, Spencer Engler/Ryan Throop at No. 2 and Jack Raymond/Duncan Cooper at No. 3. Cadillac won No. 4 doubles.

Korreck tied with Glen Lake's Mitch Roman and Cadillac's Eric Hablot for first. Positioning was decided on a coin flip.

RUGBY

TC Alliance 15
Grand Rapids Catholic 0

Adam Krantz, Andrew Dane and Matthew Benson each had five points as the TC Alliance shut out Grand Rapids Catholic, 15-0.

Krantz (Suttons Bay) and Dane (TC Central) had successful tries for TC. Benson (St. Francis) had a penalty kick and a conversion.

No team has scored a try against the Alliance (3-0) this season.

Kalamazoo 15
TC Blues 5

Kalamazoo beat the Traverse Bay Blues rugby team 15-5 Saturday.

The Blues, led by former TC Alliance flanker Dane Billingsley, played aggressively in a scoreless first half. Kalamazoo opened the scoring in the second half, but Traverse City answered with a try by Steve Wilkerson, who leads the team in scoring with 15 points. Kalamazoo, however, closed out the final 20 minutes with two tries.

The Blues (1-1) will look to regroup against Grand Rapids on Saturday.
