News in brief

Four are injured in Garfield Road crash

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse sheriff's officials are investigating a car crash on Garfield Road that sent four people to the hospital and closed the road for about three hours.

A 9-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy were in critical condition with possible life-threatening injures at Munson Medical Center Wednesday after a vehicle they occupied was hit broadside at the intersection of Garfield and Potter Roads in Blair Township around 8:17 a.m., Undersheriff Nathan Alger said.

A 71-year-old woman was driving that vehicle east on Potter Road when it was hit by a truck driven by a 35-year-old man(*) who was heading north on Garfield Road. The drivers also were taken to Munson for minor injuries, Alger said.

"There was no weather conditions present that would have caused this,” Alger said. "We are still early on in the investigation, but we believe the children were buckled, as well as the drivers.”

Sheriff's officials are not yet releasing the victims' names.

Clearing the Record
Because of incorrect information provided by the Grand Traverse Sheriff's Department, the age of a man involved in this crash on Potter and Garfield roads was originally wrong in this story. The driver of the truck, Robert Leusby, is 35 years old.
