Walk raises money to fight hunger

EMPIRE — The Southwest Leelanau County Crop Walk will raise money to help end hunger.

The 3-kilometer walk is scheduled for Oct. 1. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. at the Empire United Methodist Church, 10050 Michigan St., and the walk starts at 1:30 p.m. Participants who are unable to walk can rock in rocking chairs for pledges.

Organizers set a goal of 60 walkers and hope to raise $3,500 for local and national self-help development programs. Last year's walk involved 54 walkers who raised more than $3,300.
