SUTTONS BAY — Tendercare Inc. is set to open the newest long-term nursing care center in Leelanau County and move a community of residents to their new home in Suttons Bay.

The long-term care and rehabilitation center, located at 124 W. Fourth St. in the village, will open its doors Monday. It will replace Tendercare's facility at the now-closed Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.

The 62 residents from the Northport center will begin moving in at 9 a.m., and plans call for all residents to be moved in by the end of the day, said Tendercare representative Gretchen Mouland.

"The residents are very excited," she said. "Family members are beginning to bring over their loved ones' personal belongings and set up their rooms."

The new 72-bed center features private and semi-private rooms, a large therapy gym, two enclosed courtyards and numerous other areas for residents and families to gather.

On Friday, employees were busy receiving new therapy equipment, cooking a test run in the kitchen and making other final preparations for Monday's opening.

Tendercare, based in Sault Ste. Marie, managed long-term care services at Leelanau Memorial through an agreement with Munson Healthcare since Munson announced the hospital's closure in April 2004. The company also owns and operates two facilities on LaFranier Road in Traverse City.

Tendercare wanted to build a more centrally located Leelanau County facility situated conveniently for area physicians, families and employees. The new location is near shopping, dining, the Suttons Bay Public Schools and other community amenities.

Mouland said Tendercare staff developed individual plans for each resident to ensure a safe move and smooth transition to their new home. Each resident has an overnight bag and a list of things that need to be done for them.

All employees from the Northport facility will move to the center in Suttons Bay.

"There will be lots of familiar faces," Mouland said.

Parkside Management Services of Skokie, Ill., is developing Northport Highlands, a senior housing complex at the Leelanau Memorial site. That project will include a mix of independent and assisted living and is expected to open in 2007.
