Manistee CC tops TC Christian

MANISTEE — A big effort helped Manistee Catholic Central hand Traverse City Christian its first loss of the season.

Five-foot-11 junior Elisa Bauman had 16 ponts and her 'little' sister, 6-2 sophomore Ashley, added 10 as Manistee Catholic held off a laye TC Christian rally for a 39-37 triumph on Thursday.

LisaDust added five assists for Manistee Catholic (4-1).

Emily Morgan had 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists to lead TC Christian (3-1).

Abby Streeter added six points, three blocks and three steals, Megan Ritsema six points and four rebounds and Kara Finney four points and six assists for the visitors.

TC Christian hosts Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

Frankfort 66
Leland 39

Frankfort remained undefeated with a 66-39 triumph over Leland in a foul-filled non-conference game.

Forty-five fouls were called in the contest.

Nicole Marshall had 24 points and Brenna Banktson added 18 for Frankfort.

Erin Sneed had 26 points and Anna Lau nine for Leland (1-3). Sneed hit 19 of her 22 attempts from the free-throw line.

TC St. Francis 43
Grayling 27

Lyndsay LaCourse and Nikki Hastings led Traverse City St. Francis to a 43-27 win over Grayling in a Cherryland Conference battle.

LaCourse scored 12 points and Hastings 10 for the Glads (2-3, 1-1).

Abby Wheeler's 10 points led Grayling.

Elizabeth Vernam's 10 points paced the TCSF junior varsity in a 56-24 win over Grayling. Jamie Colburn added 9 points for the Glads, who stay undefeated at 5-0. Jess Binschacel led Grayling with 6 points.

Traverse City St. Francis held on for a 20-19 freshman win over Grayling to remain undefeated. Jennifer Hathaway paced the Glads (4-0) with 8 points.

Alpena 48
TC West 40

Rachel Gebauer's 10 points led 9 Wildcat players to get on the scoresheet as Alpena recorded a 48-40 win over Traverse City West.

Sierra Breithaupt led the Titans (1-5, 1-1 Big North Conference) with 11 points, 5 reounds and 4 steals, while Jess Oakley had 8 rebounds. Lauren Heindl contributed 6 points and 5 boards.

Alpena held West to 12 points in the second half.

The Titans won the JV game 38-24 for their first win of the year. Gabby Muller's 9 points paced West (1-4).

Aly Zimmerman had 16 points and Courtney Saxton five as the TC West freshmen (2-3) improved to 2-0 in the Big North with a 31-26 victory over Alpena.

Suttons Bay 38
L.L. St. Mary's 32

Lake Leelanau St. Mary's held Suttons Bay to two third-quarter points, but the Norse turned the tables in the final period to pull out a 38-32 victory.

Suttons Bay (3-2) outscored St. Mary's 22-13 in the final period after scoring 16 points in the first three.

Crystal Dittrich had 16 points and Maggie Walters 10 for Suttons Bay. Alyssa Korson had 14 points to lead St. Mary's (2-4).

Gaylord St. Mary 59
Mancelona 40

Jessi Palmer, Sarah Bauer and Matti Forcier proved to be a tough trio as Gaylord St. Mary improved to 3-0 in the Ski Valley Conference with a 59-40 victory over Mancelona.

Palmer led St. Mary (4-1) with 21 points. Bauer added 13 points and 15 rebounds and Forcier 15 points.

Forest Area 64
Alanson 22

Holly Gribble scored all seven of her points in the first half as Forest Area rolled to a 64-22 victory over Alanson.

Jessica Green had 18 points and Kayla Helsel 10 to lead the Warriors (2-3, 2-1 Ski Valley). Diana Hill's 11 points paced Alanson.

Bellaire 45
Pellston 25

Logan Edgecomb and Molly Poel matched Pellston's point total in Bellaire's 45-25 win over the Hornets.

Edgecomb finished with 13 points and Poel 12 for Bellaire (3-3, 2-1 Ski Valley). Amanda Egert added eight points.

Kelsey Kirsch had 10 points for Pellston.

Johannesburg 47
Boyne Falls 27

Johannesburg-Lewiston improved to 4-2 overall with a 47-27 triumph over Boyne Falls.

Ashley House led the Cardinals with 12 points. Kelly Kondrat paced Boyne Falls with 14 points.

Central Lake 61
Inland Lakes 49

Bria Patton swcored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Central Lake to a 61-49 Ski Valley Conference win over Inland Lakes.

Nikki McMichael added 14 points and 6 rebounds for the Trojans (3-2, 2-1).

Stephanie Dudek paced the Bulldogs with 18 points.

Kalkaska 49
Harbor Springs 41

Kalkaska topped Harbor Springs 49-41 to remain undefeated overall and in the Lake Michigan Conference.

The Blazers (5-0, 3-0) received a 15-point, 4-assists performance from Kara Ponstein, as well as 13 points and 13 rebounds from Katie Krause.

Caitlin Flohe added 9 points and 6 rebounds and Lindsay McLean chipped in 14 rebounds and 4 steals for Kalkaska, which travels to Elk Rapids on Thursday.

Lindsey Fahler led the Rams with 10 points.

SOCCER

TC Central 2
Alpena 0

Jeff Byl had a goal and an assist and Dane Macdonell made two saves as TC Central blanked Alpena, 2-0.

Byl had the first goal of the contest at the 21-minute mark of the second half on an assist from Hunter Brauer.

Matt Grove had the final goal on an assist from Byl for the Trojans (6-1, 3-1 Big North).

The TC Central Gold JV played to a 2-2 tie with Alpena. All four goals were in the second half.

Shawn Roach and Sebastian Stoldt had goals and Sarred Hassan an assist for Gold (4-1-1).

Elk Rapids 9
East Jordan 0

Peter Shugart had threee goals and two assists as Elk Rapids blanked East Jordan, 9-0.

Garrett Gribi had two goals and one assist and Ian Sliger a goal and five assists for the Elks (7-3, 5-2 Lake Michigan).

Mike White, Theo Stasch and Adam Benak added goals and Ryan Agruda an assist. Dan Werth had his fourth shutout in net.

Northport 8
Cadillac Heritage 1

Cody Brown and Drew Mitchell had two goals and Nathan Scherrer three assists as Northport topped Cadillac Heritage Christian, 8-1.

Basil Stowe, Quenton Buss, Matt Kehl and Scherrer also tallied goals for Northport (7-2). Jason Tropf was the winning goalie.

Leland 7
Buckley 2

Brad Dunklow had a hat trick in just his second game of the season and Leland scored five unanswered goals in a 7-2 win over Buckley.

The contest was tied 2-2 at the 18-minute mark of the first half.

Chris Roman and Eric Larsen each had a goal and an assist for the Comets, with Jesse Wurm and Jake Alsip scoring goals. Assists went to Jordan Gibson, Ryan Korson, Chris Burda and Forrest Tarza.

Jeff Jerrett had a goal and an assist for the Bears and Caleb Butler scored a goal.

Tyler Kenney made 3 saves in the first half for Leland (8-3, 2-3 Cherryland), and Ben Fellows came on in the second half to record 8 saves in 40 scoreless minutes.

GOLF

TC Central 3rd at Bay City Central Invitational

Shane Darrow's 74 led Traverse City Central to a third-place finish in the 22-team Bay City Central Invitational.

Darrow and Ben Jones, who shot a 75, were medalists in the event.

The Trojans' other top scorers were Matt Gauthier (77), Brent Stevens (83) and Tim Grimm (88).

Flint Powers won the tourney with a team score of 297, followed by Midland Dow at 299 and Central with 309.

TC Central travels to Petoskey for the Big North meet at Bayview Country Club today.

Onekama 164
Benzie Central 166

Onekama edged Benzie Central by two stokes to win a nine-hole match against the Huskies.

Jordan Pomeroy led Onekama with a 39. Levi Capper and Parker Johnson added 41s and Drew Griswold a 43 for the Portagers.

Paul Norman led Benzie with a 36. Sean Maier added a 38, Brady Cole a 43 and Brandon Evans a 49.

TENNIS

TC Central 8
Cadillac 0

No. 4-ranked Traverse City Central shut out Cadillac 8-0 in the Trojans' first dual meet of the season.

Central lost only 3 points in singles matches and 10 in doubles in the convincing victory.

In singles, the Trojans received wins from Erin Chadwell (6-0, 6-0), Melissa Engel (6-2, 6-1), Emily Lelandais (6-0, 6-0) and Katie Krueger (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, wins came from Ali Gribi/Laura Spencer (6-0, 6-0), Callee Newhouse/Sarah Malone (6-0, 6-2), Melissa Hughes/Kayla Casciano (6-1, 6-3) and Kim Campbell/Kara Dornbusch (6-0, 6-4).

TC Central had its dual opener against Alpena canceled due to weather.

The Trojans travel to Midland today for a dual match, and added a date in the Grosse Pointe North INvitational on Saturday, a tourney that features 4 of the teams ranked in top 5 in Division 1 and 2 top 5 teams from Division 2.

TC West 8
Petoskey 0

Traverse City West breezed to an 8-0 victory over Petoskey, failing to yield more than three games in any set.

Winning in singles for the Titans were Emily Jones at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2), Ellen Ott at No. 2 (6-0, 6-2), Jordan Davenport at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1) and Brooke Rodes at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1).

Prevailing in doubles were Hannah Bach/Dani Gourlay at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Lisa Watson/Lydia Lovejoy at No. 2 (6-0, 6-0), Haley Robinson/Kelley Robinson at No. 3 (6-2, 6-3) and Katie Madison/Shelby Crocker at No. 4 (6-3, 6-2).

TC East freshmen 4
Ludington JV 4

The TC East freshmen swept the doubles, but the Ludington JVs did the same in doubles in a 4-4 tie.

Winning in singles for East were Audrey Lyman at No. 1 (6-2, 6-3), Kelly Krueger at No. 2 (6-1, 7-5), Molly Kate Gardner at No. 3 (6-3, 6-2) and Allie Cole at No. 4 (7-5, 6-3). Sarah Khoury won 8-0 in an exhibition.

JV FOOTBALL

TC Central 27
Petoskey 8

Alex Fancy ran for two touchdowns and caught another as Traverse City Central topped Petoskey 27-8 in junior varsity action.

The Trojans led 7-0 at halftime and 27-0 at one point before the Northmen (1-3, 0-2) scored a late TD.

Jacob Borysiak had a TD pass to Fancy, and Max Walked scored a rushing TD.

Brad Doty had a fumble recovery and Blair Bell an interception on defense for Central (2-2, 2-0 Big North).

TC St. Francis 27
Boyne City 14

Corey Williams passed for more than 150 yards and three touchdowns as TC St. Francis topped Boyne City, 27-14.

Williams hit Matt Zakrzewski with TD passes of 33 and 37 yards and connected with Taylor Hennrick from 27 yards out. Hennrick also scored on a 49-yard run.

Boyne City got rushing touchdowns from Aaron Anzell (25 yards) and Drew Nohel (4).

Defensive standouts for the 3-1 Glads were Jack Gallagher, Max Bullough, Anthony Armour, Paul Britten and Zakrzewski.
