St. Mary's takes golf match

LELAND — Three freshmen led Lake Leelanau St. Mary to a win over Kingsley and Frankfort in a match at Leland Country Club.

St. Mary School shot a 180, Kingsley a 195 and Frankfort a 230.

Leading St. Mary's were freshmen Tyler Shaffran (42), Michael Pendergast (43) and Bradford Schaub (45). Seniors Stephan Haibel and Greg Alsip tied for the team's fourth score by each carding 50.

Kingsley's low man was Miles Guy who turned in a 44. He was followed by John Bodjack with a 46, D.J. Stevens with a 51 and David Rye and Andrew Overten with 54s.

Jack Wilband paced Frankfort with a 45.

Glen Lake 244

Matt Yeiter earned medalist honors with a 38 as Traverse City Christian beat Glen Lake 205-244 in a nine-hole match at Spruce Run.

Colin Kreh shot a 45 and Nathan Banks a 47 for the Sabres. Austin Novak's 50 topped Glen Lake. Dusty Popa fired a 52.

Elk Rapids 5
Kalkaska 1

Justin Veliquette and Theo Stasch scored two goals apiece as Elk Rapids beat Kalkaska 5-1 in a Lake Michigan Conference soccer match.

Trevor Chase also tallied for the Elks.

Stasch, John Greiner and Derek Johnson drew assists. Max Bauer and George Alvardo shared goaltending duties.

Grayling 4
Standish-Sterling 1

Tony Florival scored one goal and assisted on another as Grayling beat Standish-Sterling 4-1.

A.J. Anter, Adam Crittenden and Colin Hamlin also tallied for the Vikings (4-4).

Ralph Stelter scored on a penalty kick for Standish-Sterling. Chris Wells was in goal for Grayling.
