Fun in mud for Grieve, Petoskey

Glass helps Penn St. to win over Texas

CHARLEVOIX — Kalkaska's Paul Grieve set a new course record and the Petoskey boys took the overall title at the annual Mud Run in Charlevoix.

Petoskey finished with a total time of 1:28.0, just 39 seconds ahead of runner-up Troy Athens.

Kalkaska was third (1:29.13), Charlevoix fourth (1:31.21) and Harbor Springs (1:36.11).

Grieve won the 11th-12th grade race with a time of 16:45.

Petoskey dominated the 11-12 race with Patrick Liederbach second (16:57), Blaise Henning third (17:01), Derek Henning seventh (17:36) and Dan Kerr ninth (17:51).

Kalkaska's Jesse Moggo was fourth (17:04) and Charlevoix's eighth (17:37).

Ellsworth's Ashton Fischer won the boys 9-10 race in 17:38.

Rounding out the top five was Alex Buday of Charlevoix (17:57), Andrew Olds of Gaylord (18:16), Tec Adams of Harbor Springs (18:38) and Craig Miller of Kalkaska (18:39). Alex Grieve of Kalkaska was sixth (18:55), Alan McCarty of Harbor Springs eighth (19:29), Anthony Allison of Grayling ninth (19:52) and Jacob Brushaber of Harbor Springs 10th (19:58).

TC Central fourth at Brother Rice Invitational

Kevin Tarczon posted a top 10 finish and TC Central finished fourth at the Brother Rice Invitational.

Ann Arbor Pioneer won the boys portion with 73 points. TC Central finished with 196.

Tarczon was ninth overalm in 17:11. Ian Connick was 13th (17:21), Alex Lance 41st (17:51), Jacob Secor 52nd (17:59) and Elliot Putnam 81st (18:26).

Among more than 400 runners in the JV race, Central's Evan Dancer was first (18:10), Dustin Sabins third (18:27) and Jesse Smith fifth (18:40).

TC West wins Hill and Bale Invite

Traverse City West's pack running paid off Saturday as the Titans won the Fremont Hill and Bale Invitational.

The Titans finished with 43 points. Host Fremont was second with 65.

West put four runners in the top eight. They were four seconds apart. Runners had to jump over bales of hay on the difficult course.

Ben Kubesh placed fifth (17:20), Peter Martin sixth (17:21), Geoff Burns seventh (17:23) and Erik Wilson eighth (17:24). Dan Riggins was the fifth counter, placing 17th (18:)1).

West also won the JV race with 26 points. Mitch Snider (18:33) and Ian Butler (18:47) were second and third, respectively.

Trojans seventh in Meet of Champions

Traverse City Central finished seventh in an elite field in the Midwest Meet of Champions in Hilliard, Ohio.

Bowling Green, a state champion in Ohio, won the girls meet with 74 points. Central came in with 167 just behind Clarkston, which had 154. The Trojans were led by Taylor Mattarella, who was sixth in 19:27. She was followed by teammates Jamie Chapman (25th in 20:21), Julia Otwell (40th in 21:05), Courtney Firman (47th in 21:20) and Katie Perkins (49th in 21:22).

Benzie, TC Christian and Buckley capture trophies

Benzie Central brought home two trophies while TC Christian and the host Bears took one at the Buckley Invitational.

Benzie was the overall boys winner with 22 points, well ahead of runner-up Pine River (63). TC St. Francis was third (82) followed by Kingsley (145), Class D champ Buckley (163) and Suttons Bay (171).

Alex Roth of Benzie was the overall winner in 16:47. Jason Gray was third (17:10), Morgan Gomez fifth (17:24), Miles Hunsinger sixth (17:28), Scott McKeel seventh (17:32) and A.J. Patterson eighth (17:42).

Other top local finishers were Suttons Bay's Drew Palmer in 10th (18:10) and Corey Parshall of TC Christian in 11th (18:18).

Pine River was the overall girls winner with 30 points with Benzie (40) settling for second. St. Francis was third (109) followed by Kingsley (125), Glen Lake (144) and Class D champ TC Christian (156).

Marissa Treece of Glen Lake was the overall winner in a course-record time of 18:06.

Benzie Central had Devyn Ramsey in second, Crystal Alton in fifth and Chloe Grabowski in eighth. Central Lake's Kari Johnson was eighth.

Amanda Send was 11th (21:10) to lead TC Christian.

TC West boys win the Hill and Dale Invitational

The TC West girls were fifth in the large school division with 128 points.

Anne Prisk led the Titans, taking 17th in 21:50. Brianne VanSumeren was 19th (21:55), Elise Carolan 24th (22:33), Emmy Carter 33rd (23:01) and Jess Williams 35th (23:27).

TC West was second in the JV race as Jennifer Bragiel was fourth (23:07) and Dena Andre sixth (23:40).

Elk Rapids boys second in division at Bath Invite

Elk Rapids placed five in the top 25 and took second among 16 Division 2 teams at the Bath Invitational.

Linden's 54 points were 10 better than the Elks.

Thomas Lucas was fourth (16:58), Erik Sundberg 11th (17:33), Jim Janisse 12th (17:37), Ryan Sundberg 18th (17:51) and Jake Mills 23rd (18:05).

The Elk Rapids girls had Bethany Hammer drop out due to an injury and wound up in sixth place.

Amanda Hammer was third (19:27), Sam Stites 26th (21:17), Catherine Otte 56th (22:36), Allison Flannery 57th (22:43) and Leah Harrington 71st (23:07).

Glass helps lead Penn State past host Texas

Freshman Alisha Glass (Leland) helped No. 2 Penn State rally to beat No. 7 Texas (27-30, 28-30, 30-28, 36-34, 15-13) at the Texas Invitational on Friday.

Glass has 63 assists, eight kills, 16 digs, 7 total blocks and hit .438 for the 8-0 Nittany Lions. Glass was named to the all-tourney team.

TC Central 38

Flushing improved to 4-0 with a 70-38 victory over TC Central.

Courtney Walters led Flushing wityh 19 points while Jordan LaDuke and Joleen Manley each added 13. Lindsay Smith paced TC Central (2-2) with 11 points.

Flushing won the JV game, 53-40.

Allison Wolffis scored 21 points and Marie Roof 11 as Muskegon Mona Shores defeated TC West 42-29.

Mona Shores led 25-8 at the break. Erica Olson had 10 points, Jessica Oakley 8 points and 7 rebounds and Molly Montgomery 4 steals for the Titans (0-4).

Mona Shores won the JV game 35-24.

McBain NMC 41

Four players scored in double figures as Benzie Central topped McBain Northern Michigan Christian, 54-41.

Maria Blazejewski and Jolene Jeske had 12 points while Mikayla Lonn and Samantha Kosiboski each added 10. Blazejewski added six rebounds and two steals, Jeske four steals and Lonn seven rebounds for the Huskies (3-1).

Erin VanderPlas had 11 points and Caitlyn Ouwinga 10 points for the Comets.

North Grand Rapids 42

Ellisha Crosby had 21 points, 18 rebounds and four blocks to lead TC Homeschool to a 69-42 victory over North Grand Rapids.

Susie Holbrook added 18 points and five steals and Sarah Musser 11 points for the Bulldogs (3-0).

Four different players scored goals as TC Central beat Ludington, 4-2.

Zach Swartz and Jeff Byl had first-half goals. David Harman and Andy Terhune drew the assists for Central (4-1).

Matt Madion made it 3-0 five minutes into the second half with a goal assisted by Kyle Broadway and Harman. Matt Grove closed it out with a chip over the keeper.

TC Central JV Black (5-0-2) won 4-1 as Greg Merica had two goals and Luke Grof two assists.

Rain helps Seaholm capture tourney title

Birmingham Seaholm's 13 points were good enough to win the rain-shortened Ann Arbor Invitational.

Host Ann Arbor Huron was second with 12½ points followed by TC Central (11), Ann Arbor Pioneer (10½) and Birmingham Marian (10).

The Trojans were in the finals at No. 1 and 2 singles. Erin Chadwell beat Midland Dow (6-2, 6-3) and Port Huron Northern (6-1, 6-0) to reach the final match at No. 1 singles while Melissa Engel beat Huron 7-6(4), 7-5 and Dow 6-1, 6-3.

Callee Newhouse/Sarah Malone were one win away from the finals at No. 2 by beating Ann Arbor Pioneer (6-4, 6-2) and were up on Marian (6-1, 3-3).

Posting one victory were Katie Krueger at No. 4 singles, Ali Gribi/Laura Spencer at No. 1 doubles and Melissa Hughes/Kayla Casciano at No. 3.

Lamey/Connick flight runners-up for JV team

Alex Lamey and Maddy Connick were second at No 3 doubles for the TC Central JV team at the Ludington Invitational.

Dienes leads the way for TC West at Alma Invite

Mount Pleasant shot a 305 to win the Alma Invitational.

TC West was 10th with a 331. P.J. Dienes tied for seventh with a 77 and Shane Hoffman added an 81.

The TC Central JVs shot a 339 led by an 81 from Tim Grimm.

SWIMMING

TC West takes second, TC Central places third

Elyse Schultz, Amy Brunner and Jordan Newhouse were in on three firsts as TC West placed second in the South Haven Invitational.

Schultz won the 200 freestyle (2:06.43), Brunner the 100 freestyle (56.41) and Newhouse the 100 butterfly (1:05.29). The three teamed with Keeli DePoister to claim the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.44) and 400 freestyle relay (3:54.56).

TC Central was sixth, led by a second from Erin Holstad in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.11).
