Gaylord stops Petoskey in Big North opener

Gaylord opened Big North conference play with a 21-12 win over Petoskey on Friday night.

Ellis Raatz paced Gaylord (1-2), completing 12 of 14 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown — a 9-yarder to Mike Frazee.

Shane Kwapis scored from 5 yards to make it 14-0 at halftime.

Petoskey (1-2) put its first points on the board in the third quarter on a 41-yard pass from Rob Michael to Warren Gero.

Raatz scored scored again in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run.

Michael connected with Gero on a 56-yard pass for Petoskey's final TD.

Benzie Central 34
Whittemore-Prescott 14

Dan Loney was involved in four Benzie Central scores, leading the Huskies to a 34-14 win over Whittemore-Prescott.

Loney scored on a 60-yard interception return, threw TD passes to Logan Schendel and Ben Nugent and scored on a run.

Tyler Gilbert added a 45-yard interception return for a score.

Dan Melton led Benzie in rushing with 146 yards.

Onaway 20
Bellaire 12

Onaway edged Bellaire, 20-12 in Ski Valley play.

Onaway scored on a Tim Garms 39-yard pass to Levi Dennis and a 39-yard run by Garms. Andrew LaLonde scored from 56 yards.

For Bellaire, Rob Fischer scored on a 41-yard run by Rob Fischer and a 17-yard pass from Ryan Hebden to Brad Guy.

Dakota Jones paced Bellaire with 64 yards.

Central Lake 66
Forest Area 0

Central Lake blanked Forest Area, 66-0.

Cody Rogers led Central Lake (3-0) with three rushing and two receiving touchdowns.

Nolan Howes added three rushing TDs while Joe Rubingh and Landon Waller had one each.

Byron Patton was 6-for-8 passing for 77 yards and two touchdowns.

Grayling 28
East Jordan 0

Jeff Bancroft did it all.

Grayling's senior quarterback passed for three touchdowns and ran for another and was equally dominant on defense with 13 tackles, two sacks and interception in the Vikings' 28-0 victory over East Jordan.

Bancroft was 12-for-22 passing and connected on touchdowns of 47 yards to Josh Stapleton, 23 yards to Isaac VanNuck and 36 yards to Nick Parkinson.

Bancroft also scored on a 14-yard run for Grayling.

Ryan Cooper led the rushing attack with 115 yards on 12 carries.

Elk Rapids 58
Harbor Springs 0

Elk Rapids quarterback Levi Martin completed three passes and all three went for touchdowns in the Elks' 58-0 victory over Harbor Springs.

Martin hooked up with Jesse Funnell for TDs of 80 and 35 yards and also hit Zac Dreffs for a 52-yard score.

Charlie Smith rushed four times for 108 yards and scored three touchdowns (52, 19 and 31 yards).

Also scoring for Elk Rapids (3-0, 1-0) were Brandon Isenhart on a 46-yard run, Tyler Smith on a 48-yard run and Jimmy Armstrong on a 26-yard run.

Suttons Bay 32
Manton 0

Anthony Stewart ran for 150 yards and two touchdowns to lead Suttons Bay to a 32-0 win over Manton.

Stewart also had 8 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Jordan Peplinski ran for 75 yards for the Norse (3-0), and Jeff Ruthkowski was 4-for-7 passing for 51 yards, including a 19-yard TD pass to Cale Forton. Ruthkowski also ran for a 15-yard TD.

Forton added a 1-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter to conclude the scoring.

Glen Lake 15
Mesick 12

Weston Buchan's 1-yard run in the fourth quarter was the difference as Glen Lake ended Mesick's undefeated run, 15-12.

Tommy Nakhovanh hit Ben Peltier from 2 yards and ran 5 yards for a score as Mesick led 12-7 at half.

The Lakers, who scored on a Jason Kemp 7-yard run in the first half, rallied behind Kemp, who was 7-for-16 passing for 132 yards.

Manistee 42
Big Rapids 7

Ben Hainstock rushed for 198 yards and three touchdowns as Manistee pulled away in the second half for a 42-7 win over Big Rapids.

Jason Dontz added 72 yards on the ground for the Chippewas (2-1). He scored twice. Dontz also had an interception on defense.

Manistee held Big Rapids to 151 totals yards — 28 on the ground.

GOLF

TC Central third, West 16th in Gaylord Invite

Alpena's Tyler Skiba and Kevin Szymanski both shot 78s to lead the Wildcats to victory in the Gaylord Invitational golf tournament on The Otsego Club's Classic course.

Alpena shot 322 as a team.

Traverse City Central finished fifth at 333 as Shane Darrow carded an 82, Clay Lesley 83, Ben Jones 84 and Brent Stevens 84.

TC West — 16th at 345 — was paced by Shane Hoffman (83), Brian Kelly (85), Travis Walkowiac (87) and Josh Peterson (90).

Central still leads the Big North Conference standings by a slim margin over Alpena and Petoskey.

TC Central golfers win Gaylord JV Invitational

The Traverse City junior varsity placed four players in the top 10 and shot a 313 to win the 14-team Gaylord JV Invitational golf tournament at Black Bear Golf Club.

Pacing the Trojans were Billy Korreck (76), Blake Knoblock (76), Tim Grimm (79), Alex Homant (82) and Chris Boone (92).

Gaylord was fifth with a 346. Corey Thiel shot an 84, followed by Ian Davis (86), Josh Broad (87) and Bryan Clishe (89).
