TC Central shuts out Petoskey, 2-0

TC West blanks Gaylord, 4-0

PETOSKEY — Sam Kelly and David Harman scored goals and goaltender Dane Macdonnel turned away two shots and four corner kicks to lead Traverse City Central to a 2-0 soccer win over Petoskey.

Jeff Byl assisted on Kelly's goal, which came 25 minutes into the first half. Harman added an insurance tally with two minutes remaining in the game.

Central improved its record to 3-1-0 overall, 1-1 in the Big North Conference.

In junior varsity action, Petoskey defeated the TC Central Gold team 5-1, while the Central Black settled for a 2-2 tie.

TC West 4
Gaylord 0

Dan Kellogg scored two goals and assisted on a third as Traverse City West remained unbeaten in the Big North Conference with a 4-0 soccer win over Gaylord.

Casey Townsend and Drew Nichols also tallied for the Titans (4-1-2 overall, 3-0 in the league). Townsend assisted on the goal by Nichols. Curt Olson and Nate Arends drew assists on the two Kellogg goals.

West was led defensively by Sam Coughonour and Kace Lovejoy. Jon Nowak was in goal.

In the JV game, West posted a 7-0 win as Andrew Bahle and Kevin Karsch netted two goals apiece. Brady Fagan, Jake Traselet and Tyler Champt also tallied for the Titans (4-0). Eric Nixon and Alex Sanderson shared goaltending duties.

Grayling 4
Kalkaska 3

Tony Florizal scored three goals to propel Grayling past Kalkaska, 4-3.

Chris Wells was the winning goalie as the Vikings improved to 3-3.

Elk Rapids 2
Charlevoix 1

John Greiner and Loren Mercer scored goals for Elk Rapids as the Elks topped Charlevoix 2-1 in Lake Michigan Conference action.

Greiner's goal was assisted by his brother, Mike. Matt Bauer was in goal for the Elks (3-1 LMC).

Elk Rapids hosts a four-team tournament this Saturday featuring Gaylord, Marquette and Muskegon Catholic. The Elks and Blue Devils kick things off at 9 a.m.

Suttons Bay 4
Buckley 0

Suttons Bay used goals by Shane MacDonald, Alex Dingrando, Pat Crego and Niel Bell to beat Buckley 4-0 in Cherryland Conference play.

Jesse Wright had two assists and MacDonald and Sean Riley one apiece. Matt Ness was in goal for the Norsemen (3-2, 1-1).

FOOTBALL

TC Central JV 42
Alpena JV 14

Jacob Borysiak and Alex Fancy each rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to propel the Traverse City Central junior varsity past the Alpena JV squad, 42-14.

Nick Roen was on the receiving end of both TD passes.

Max Walker and Cameron Hodges were defensive standouts for the Trojans (1-2).

St. Francis JV 41
Charlevoix JV 0

Corey Williams ran for one touchdown, passed for another and kicked five extra points as the St. Francis JV rolled past Charlevoix 41-0.

Williams connected with Kevin Petterson from 5 yards out for a TD. He also snuck in from one yard.

Adding TD runs for the 2-1 Gladiators: Taylor Hennrick from 14 yards, Mike Mead from 2, Max Bullough from 18 and Ben Schell from 5.

Two touchdowns were set up by turnovers — a Jon Buday fumble recovery and a 55-yard pass interception by lineman Luke Popp. Matt Zakrewski and Bullough led the defense.

GOLF

St. Francis wins LMC match at Grayling

Andrew Walukonis shot a 38 and Tony Casciano a 39 as St. Francis continued to dominate the Lake Michigan Conference.

The Gladiators won their sixth league match Thursday at Grayling by firing a 160. Blane Casciano carded a 41 and Tom Brick a 42 for the Gladiators.

Charlevoix took second with a 172. The Rayders' Kris Bartling shared medalist honors with Walukonis by firing a 38.

Harbor Springs, sparked by Tyler Parkin's 39, placed third with a 173. The Rams were followed by Grayling at 175, Kalkaska at 178, Elk Rapids at 180, East Jordan at 195 and Boyne City at 204.

CROSS COUNTRY

Benzie sweeps dual with Manistee

Benzie Central made it a clean sweep over Manistee on Thursday, winning the boys and girls dual meets by identical 15-50 scores.

Taking the top seven spots in the boys' race were Benzie's Jason Gray (17:54), Miles Hunsinger (18:11), Scott McKeel (18:11), Morgan Gomez (18:37), William Patterson (18:33), Alex Roth (18:34) and Chris Noah (19:14).

Taking the top seven spots in the girls race were Benzie's Crystal Alton (20:55), Devyn Ramsay (21:18), Chloe Grabowski (21:51), Katie Allen (22:41), Catie Burcoft (23:37), Jill Louisignau (23:49) and Lauren Kline (23:52).
