Marquette adds another road victory
Redettes complete 3-0 trip with win over TC West

Marquette's season-opening road trip couldn't have gone much better.
The Redettes completed a season-opening basketball sweep of Grand Traverse County teams on Thursday with a 50-25 victory over Traverse City West.
Marquette defeated Kingsley 45-38 on Monday and TC Central 52-42 on Wednesday.
"We've had a lot of fun down here; it's been great for team bonding," Redettes coach Karla Strand said. "This is a basketball trip, but you can't overlook the fact that we're here to have fun, too.
"There's a time and place for everything. This was a great way to start the season."
Marquette held a slim 13-10 lead midway through the second quarter before closing out the half with a 13-0 run. Six of those points came off West turnovers, and the Redettes carried a 26-10 advantage into intermission. They later led 39-21 at the end of the third quarter.
"Marquette is aggressive and they finish," said Titans head coach Patti Tibaldi. "You have to make lay-ups and free throws. They did, we didn't. They dominated the game."
Melissa LaPointe paced the Redettes with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Jessica Trotochaud added 10 points.
Jess Oakley's 12 points topped West (0-2).
"We're inexperienced... we're having a hard time getting into the flow," said West's Erica Olson, who celebrated her 18th birthday on Thursday. "It'll come together. We'll get there."
Marquette also won the junior varsity game 61-38.

Traverse City Christian made an early season statement Wednesday night.
Kara Finney earned tournament MVP honors as the Sabres beat St. Francis 42-30 to capture the Katie Heintz "We Believe" Tip-Off Classic.
Finney had 13 points, six assists and four steals to pace Christian (2-0). Kelley Ritsema added 10 points; Abby Streeter six points and seven rebounds; Emily Morgan five points, three rebounds, two blocks; and Megan Ritsema seven rebounds. Morgan joined Finney on the all-tournament team.
Lyndsay LaCourse led St. Francis with eight points.
Lake Leelanau St. Mary's won the consolation game with a 59-53 win over Glen Lake. Alyssa Korson's 25 points paced the Eagles. Susan Herman added 17 and Sarah Schaub 11.
Erika Easter tossed in 12 points, Abbie Christiansen 11 and Anna Brown 10 for the Lakers.
St. Francis won the JV tourney, topping Glen Lake 60-25 in the final as Elizabeth Vernam had 17 points.

Benzie Central outscored Petoskey 19-8 in the final period en route to a 45-37 victory in the title game of the Petoskey Invitational.
Maria Blazejewski paced Benzie (2-0) with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. Jolene Jeske added nine points and Mikayla Lonn six rebounds, three steals and three assists.

Bria Patton netted 20 points to lead Central Lake past Buckley, 49-37.
Central Lake was led by Stephanie Burkett with 12 points and Amanda Youker with 10.

Mancelona edged Boyne Falls, 30-29.
Katie Alexander led Mancelona (1-1) with nine points and Cheyenne McCorry scored seven.
Kellie Komdnat netted a game-high 20 points for Mancelona.

Bellaire picked up its first win, 41-34 over Leland.
Molly Poel scored 17 points to lead the Eagles and Aubrey Hocking had 11.
Leland (0-1) was paced by Erin Sneed, Erika Green and Whitney Grant with 10 points apiece.

Johannesburg-Lewiston edged Vanderbilt, 53-52 in overtime.
Ashlie House netted a free throw in the final seconds of overtime for the victory.
Bridgette Fisher led Johannesburg with 20 points, 17 rebounds and four steals.
Jessica Sewel added 13 points and 11 rebounds while House finished with eight points, eight rebounds and five steals.
Elk Rapids ends Trojans' streak at Ogemaw Hts.
Elk Rapids edged Traverse City Central 34-37 to win the 11-team Ogemaw Heights Invitational, the first time in 13 years that the Trojans haven't captured the boys title.
Cadillac was third (148), Rogers City fourth (149) and Ogemaw Heights fifth (151).
Pacing the Elks were Thomas Lucas, third (17:28); Eric Sundberg, fourth (17:49); Jim Janisse, ninth (18:02); Jake Mills, 12th (18:28); and Ryan Sundberg, 14th (18:36).
Leading Central were Kevin Tarczon, second (17:24); Elliott Putman, fifth (17:54); Alex Lane, eighth (18:00); Jacob Secor, 13th (18:30); and Aaron Trippe, 15th (18:47).
TC Central won the girls title, edging host Ogemaw Heights in a tiebreaker.
Counting for the Trojans were Taylor Mattarella, third (20:22); Emily Westerman, fifth (20:53); Julia Otwell, ninth (21:21); Jamie Chapman, 10th (21:27); and Kelsey Minor, 12th (21:35).
Elk Rapids was second in the small-school division, led by a first-place finish from Amanda Hammer (20:01). Also scoring were Samantha Stipes, 17th (22:14); Catherine Otte, 27th (22:49); Allison Flannery, 30th (23:15); and Leah Harrington, 40th (23:53).
Brunner qualifies for state in two events
Amy Brunner qualified for the Division 1 state meet in two events at a non-scoring meet.
Brunner, who swims for TC West, won the 100 butterfly (1:00.22) and was second in the 50 freestyle (25.44) to post state-qualifying times.
TC West also got wins from Jordan Newhouse in the 200 individual medley (2:24.25) and Sarah VanCoonis in diving (195.7 points). TC Central's Erin Holstad won the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.67.

Brian Grost and Ted Groenevelt each had a goal and an assist in the second half as TC Central topped Marquette, 5-1.
Scoring first-half goals for the Trojans (2-1) were Chris Burgess (assisted by Matt Grove), Jeff Byl (Travis Heeren) and Grove (Mike Waisanen).
Dane Macdonell was the goalie for the Trojans. Kyle Broadway and Heeren controlled the midfield.
TC Central's Black JV tied 1-1 and posted a 9-1 victory against Marquette's two teams.

Northport's Ryan Blessing dribbled up the left side and arched a shot to the far post with 1:52 left in the game to hand Leland its first loss of the season, 2-1.
Basil Stowe scored on a free kick with 21:41 left for Northport (4-1) after Eric Larson put Leland (5-1) up 1-0 with 11 minutes left in the first half.
TC West 2
Alpena 0
Traverse City West scored the lone goal in each half to top Alpena, 2-0.
Casey Townsend scored first assisted by Dan Kellogg.
Kellogg knocked in the second goal with Townsend returning the favor with an assist.
John Nowak was the winning goalie with five saves.
West won the JV game, 3-1.
Scoring for the Titans were: Cody Hamilton, Brady Sagan and Ricardo Rodriguez.

Dan Werth notched his third straight shutout as Elk Rapids downed Cadillac 3-0.
Andy Caperton, Mike Geiner and Garrett Gribi each scored goals for the Elks. Ian Sliger, Caperton and Gribi had assists for the Elks (3-1).
Harbor Springs 9
East Jordan 0
Terrance Frank had a hat trick as Harbor Springs shut out East Jordan 9-0.
Josh Manker and Grant Walstrom had two goals each, with Mitch Weber and Matt Zoerner each with a goal.

Sean Maier carded a match-low of 81 to lead Benzie Central past Elk Rapids.
Paul Norman added an 86, Dan Kelsey an 89 and Brady Cole a 91 for Benzie.
