Day trips in Leelanau County

Leelanau Conservancy Nature Areas and Preserves

by patrick nagy

Scattered throughout Leelanau are ten sites which the Conservancy has designated as natural areas. These sites are open to the public. In addition, there are nine preserves which visitors can explore as part of a guided hike.

"My personal favorite natural area is Kehl Lake," said Jenee Rowe, stewardship director with the Leelanau Conservancy. "I like to stop at Barb's Bakery in Northport, grab some coffee and a pastry, and then make the short drive to Kehl Lake."

Kehl Lake is a 180-acre site that has a few easy-to-walk trails which enable visitors to connect with nature while enjoying the scenery.

"The newest addition to the trail system, thanks to 133 hours of volunteer labor, is a trail loop that allows hikers to pass through a meadow on the way down to the lakeshore," Rowe said.
