Commission votes to oppose Prop. 5

TRAVERSE CITY — The city expressed its opposition to an education funding proposal on the state's Nov. 7 ballot.

The Traverse City City Commission Monday voted 6-1 on a resolution to oppose Proposal 5.

The proposal would mandate automatic increases at the rate of inflation in state funding for public schools, colleges and universities.

But city commissioner Ralph Soffredine said it could jeopardize funding for city services because the proposal doesn't say from where funding would come. Commissioner Deni Scrudato said the city should not weigh in on the proposal. She cast the lone vote against the resolution.

Traverse City school district officials are also opposed to the measure, which they say doesn't solve school funding inequity.
