11/18/2006Kingsley defends its district trophyCharlevoix and Frankfort winKALKASKA Kingsley raced to a 22-5 lead and never looked back in beating Suttons Bay 65-41 in the Class C district basketball final at Kalkaska. Ashley Slade led the Lady Stags (20-3) with 19 points, all in the first half when Kingsley opened a 36-17 lead. Courtney Stocking added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Brit Denter chipped in nine points while Tallie Waurzyniak had six steals. Liz McGeshick paced Suttons Bay with 13 points. Kingsley will now host either Whittemore-Prescott or Hale in Monday's regional opener at 6 p.m. Whittemore-Prescott and Hale play today. A year ago, Kingsley advanced to the quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Houghton. more class C Charlevoix 65 Charlevoix and McBain will resume their tournament rivalry this time in girls basketball. Charlevoix claimed the Class C district title at Boyne City with a 65-50 win over East Jordan. The Rayders (18-4) will now face McBain in Monday's regional at KIngsley. McBain defeated Big Rapids Crossroads Academy 76-22. "We're excited about playing McBain, Charlevoix coach Keith Haske said. "But we've got to play better than we did tonight. Lori Zimmerman led Charlevoix with 17 points and three assists. Robyn Petzak added 12 points and five steals; Ashlie Bradley 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists; and Becca Madison nine points, nine rebounds and four steals. Meghan Thomas netted 21 points for East Jordan. class D Frankfort 55 Frankfort had a good sign after the opening quarter. The Panthers led 17-4 after the opening quarter and leading scorer Brenna Banktson didn't have a point of it. Four players had at least eight points as Frankfort topped Manistee Catholic Central 55-24 in the final of the Class D district at Frankfort. "I had unbelievable scoring from a couple of girls that I needed it from, Frankfort coach Tim Reznich said. "We played great team basketball tonight. The Panthers (18-5) advance to Monday's regional at Manistee Catholic against the winner of tonight's game between McBain Northern Michigan Christian and Beal City. Nicole Marshall led Frankfort with 16 points while Banktson finished with 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and six steals. Brooke Townsend stepped up and had 14 points for the Panthers while Kelly Tousley added eight. Ashley Bauman paced Manistee Catholic with 19 points. HOCKEY Gaylord 3 Gavin Palmer netted two second-period goals as Gaylord beat Cheboygan 3-2 in its season opener. Will Weber also tallied in the second period for the Blue Devils. Travis Payne drew two assists and Weber one. Cheboygan scored two power-play goals in the third period. Marty Korte had a goal and an assist for the Chiefs. Gaylord outshot Cheboygan 33-20. Brandon Knopp was in goal for the Blue Devils, Jared Elwell for Cheboygan. Gaylord hosts Sault Ste. Marie today.
