11/14/2006News in BriefLighthouse needs keepers for 2007NORTHPORT The Grand Traverse Lighthouse needs lighthouse keepers for the 2007 season. Primary responsibilities include greeting visitors and providing them with historical information about the museum. Keepers also work in the gift shop and help with maintenance of the buildings and grounds by sweeping, painting and trimming grass. Volunteers must be energetic, comfortable speaking with the public, in excellent health, and able to climb stairs. The season runs from April 1 to Dec. 31. Keepers may work for a period of one or two weeks and four adults are on-site during the week. Each keeper will be required to work a minimum of eight hours each day, must attend an orientation, and need to provide their own food and bedding. There is a per-person program fee of $195 per week for members. Volunteers signing up for April, November and December will be involved with cleaning, painting, minor repairs, moving artifacts to and from storage and other miscellaneous duties. Between May 15 and Sept. 15, keepers also will have the chance to help restore the South Fox Island Lighthouse. For more information, call (231) 386-7195.
