Kingsley sweeps Northwest

The Kingsley boys' and girls' track teams took top honors at the Northwest Conference meet Wednesday at Frankfort.

The Kingsley boys accumulated 161.5 points, followed by Frankfort with 129, Manton 105, Glen Lake 68, Suttons Bay 55.5, and Mesick 6.

The Stags took first place in the 3200 relay with a time of 8:38.36.

Caleb Nickerson won the high jump at 6'4" and the Stags swept discus with Joe Zenner (180.0'), Drew Wyse, (126.5'); and Brian Bott, (124'6").

Frankfort's second place finish was fueled by wins in the remaining three relays. The Panthers won the 800 relay (1:33.39), 400 relay (45.59), and the 1600 relay (3:33.55).

Glen Lake's Bryan Sevensma's time in the 300 hurdles (39.85) set a conference record.

Sevensma and Frankfort's Kris Snyder received conference co-MVP honors from the Northwest conference coaches.

Other area winners were:

LONG JUMP — Joshua Denomme, Manton (20'4.75"); SHOT PUT — Denome, Manton (43'7.75"); POLE VAULT — Steven Strohmer, Frankfort (14'); 110 HURDLES — Bryan Sevensma, Glen Lake (14.74); 100 — Kris Snyder, Frankfort (11.18); 1600 — Kevin Cataldo, Suttons Bay (4:40.86); 400 — Steve Morse, Manton (52.46); 300 HURDLES — Sevensma, Glen Lake (39.85); 800 — Morse, Manton (2:06.26); 200 — Snyder, Frankfort (22.74); 3200 — Cataldo, Suttons Bay (10:25.44).

The Kingsley girls accumulated 136 points to beat Glen Lake with 91, Suttons Bay 86, Frankfort 83, Manton 78, and Mesick 36.

Lauren Summerfield led Kingsley with wins in the 110 hurdles (16.46) and the 300 hurdles (48.54).

Jill Walton was also a double-winner for Kingsley with wins in the shot put (38'11.5") and discus (126'2").

Glen Lake's second place finish was led by the Marissa Treece with first place performances in four events including the 1600 meter run (5:15.09), 800 run (2:25.54); 3200 run (12:04.90) and pole vault (9').

Other area winners were:

LONG JUMP — Katie Christiansen, Glen Lake (15'1"); HIGH JUMP — Brittany Denter, Kingsley (4'8"); 3200 RELAY — Suttons Bay (10:39.48); 100 — Britt Frantz, Frankfort (13.06); 800 RELAY — Frankfort (1:50.68); 400 RELAY — Frankfort (53.22); 400 — Kelly Tousley, Frankfort (1:01.51); 200 — Frantz, Frankfort (26.90); 1600 RELAY — Kingsley (4:19.86).

Inland Lakes girls win Ski Valley Conference

Ashley Pomeroy took first place in three events to lead Inland Lakes to a Ski Valley Conference meet victory.

Inland Lakes finished with 159.3 points, followed by Central Lake with 93.3, Johannesburg-Lewiston 56, Bellaire 47, Onaway 46, Gaylord St. Mary 37, Pellston 33, Mancelona 24, Alanson 17.3, and Forest Area 14.

Pomeroy won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.96, the 400 at 1:00.92 and the 200 in 26.80.

Inland Lakes also took first place in discus, 800 meter relay (1:53.59), 400 relay (54.81); and the 1600 relay (4:27.94).

SOFTBALL

East Jordan 10 11
Mancelona 2 7

East Jordan won twice over Mancleona by scores of 10-2 and 11-7.

Theresa Peterson had the lone hit for Mancleona (6-22) in the first contest.

Brooke Orman paced Mancelona with three hits in the nightcap including a double. Maggie Shannahan added a double and a triple while Katie Deruiter contributed a single and a triple.

SOCCER

TC West JV Gold 0
Gaylord Freshmen 0

Traverse City West JV Gold and the Gaylord freshmen played to a 0-0 tie.

Gaylord, which remained undefeated, blanked the Gold team 4-0 in their previous meeting.

Emma Stone was in goal for the Titans (9-3-2). Sydney Johnson and Sara Carr were credited with strong defensive games.

The Traverse City West and Traverse City Central varsity teams collide tonight at the Coast Guard field. Both teams are coming off 1-0 losses — Central to Gaylord, West to Cadillac.

LACROSSE

YMCA Pirates 6
Petoskey 1

The YMCA Pirates travel lacrosse team topped Petoskey for the fifth time this season, this time by a 6-1 count.

Alex Gage scored a hat trick and Scott Spencer and Dan Shepler had goals. Bailor Bell added 2 assists and Andrew Elliott one.

Tyler Stricker and Ryan Gerstner split time in goal, combining for 11 saves.

The Pirates (5-3) travel to Petoskey on June 3 for a four-team club tournament.

BASEBALL

Midland Dow 10 6
TC Central 8 7

Traverse City Central split a doubleheader with Midland Dow, falling 10-8 in the first game before winning the second 7-6.

Andy Pascoe and Vince Khoury had two hits apiece to pace Central (23-8) in the opener. Ted Groenevelt had three RBIs for the Trojans.

Kevin Krantz earned the win on the mound in the nightcap allowing seven hits and five runs in five innings.

Khoury had three hits for Central while Bill Lazar and Ian Prokes added two hits each.

Midland Dow JV 4 4

Traverse City Central JV rolled past Midland Dow JV twice, 16-4 and 15-4.

Matt Zehner was the winning pitcher in the first game allowing six hits while striking out four.

Jeremy Whyte led the offense with three hits including a triple, three RBIs, and three runs scored.

Josh Pilarski added a double, a single and two RBIs while Derek Diekman and Matt Zehner had two RBIs each.

Brandon Goff picked up the win on the mound in the second game allowing six hits and six runs.

Diekman had four hits and five RBIs while Zehner, Ryan McMorris and Jordan Thomas added two hits apiece for the Trojans (16-10).
