Plovers bump pets from dunes' beaches

EMPIRE — No pets will be permitted until further notice on beaches at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore where piping plovers have established territories or nests.

National Park Service officials said dogs disturb birds while they are trying to establish nests and threaten successful chick rearing. Piping plovers are listed by federal and state government as an endangered species.

Park rules also require owners to keep dogs on leashes in areas where they are permitted.

Pet owners who are unsure of closures should follow posted signs or call the Lakeshore visitor center at (231) 326-5234.
