West knocks off Dow, wins tennis tourney

MIDLAND — Traverse City West won four flights and defeated top-10 ranked Midland Dow for the first time in the program's history while placing first in Saturday's Midland Dow Invitational tennis tournament.

The Titans finished with 19 points, two more than Dow. Fenton and Parchment were also in the tournament.

West won three singles titles. Dan Watson (18-2) captured No. 1, Kace Lovejoy took No. 2 and Josh Peterson (18-2) was a winner at No. 3.

Cam Williams and Andrew Dunscombe added a title at No. 4 doubles.

BASEBALL

Grand Haven 9 3

Traverse City Central's Andy Pascoe had three doubles and six RBIs in the first game and Bill Lazar had six hits on the day as the Trojans swept Grand Haven 17-9, 8-3 in a baseball doubleheader.

Lazar had two singles and a double and batted two runs in the opener. Vince Khoury was the winning pitcher in 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Ted Groenvelt added a single and a double, while Khoury, Casey Lundy and Ian Prokes each had two hits and two RBIs for Central (18-6).

Groenvelt was the winner in game two. He received support from Lazar (3 hits), Lundy (2 hits, 3 runs), Khoury (2 RBIs) and Matt Ohlert (single, double).

TC West bounces back for two victories

After a loss to No. 1 ranked Grosse Pointe North on Friday, TC West posted a pair of victories on Saturday at the Alpena Invitational.

West opened play on Saturday with a 9-4 victory over Alpena as winning pitcher Andrew Young and Chad Braun combined on a four-hitter.

Young had three hits and two RBIs and Steve Wright drove in a pair for the Titans (11-6).

Winning pitcher Sam Shipman struck out seven and banged out three hits at the plate as the Titans finished with a 16-3 romp over Sault Ste. Marie.

John Flynn, Braun and Bryce Spiker had two hits.

On Friday, West dropped a 14-4 decision to Grosse Pointe North, which didn't allow a run in its two other tournament games.

Flynn had two hits for West. Flynn, Wright, Young and Spiker were named to the all-tourney team.

Glen Lake wins own tourney with 2-0 mark

Weston Buchan had five hits to lead the host Lakers to a pair of wins and the title at the Glen Lake Invitational.

Buchan had three hits as Glen Lake finished the round robin with a 7-1 victory over Central Lake.

Josh Jacklin added two hits for Glen Lake (16-9). Jason Popa was the winning pitcher, scattering three hits and striking out five.

Glen Lake opened with a 4-3 triumph over TC St. Francis. Kienan Sutton drove in the winning run for the Lakers with a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the sixth and final inning. Buchan had two hits.

Ben Jacklin was the winning pitcher. He struck out two and allowed six hits — three to Chad Biggar.

The Gladiators (11-10-1) cruised to a 15-3 win over Central Lake in their second game as Biggar went 4-for-5 and Ben Wheelock added two hits. Billy Byrne was the winning pitcher. Biggar, Wheelock, Byrne and Jamie Adams made the all-tournament team.

TC Christian splits pair at Ellsworth tourney

Traverse City Christian opened the Ellsworth tournament with a 17-7 victory over the host school.

Winning pitcher Jonathan Murray struck out eight and Eric Hofstra pitched two innings for the save.

Andy Stevens (three RBIs), Murray (two RBIs, three runs) and Matt Frieswyk (three RBIs) had two hits for the Sabres (6-12-1).

Johannesburg-Lewiston topped TC Christian by a 9-3 score. Matt Beemer and Jacob Bullard had two hits for the Sabres.

Luxfords spark Frankfort to Bellaire tourney crown

Wade Luxford had five hits on the day and Garrett Luxford had four as Frankfort won the Bellaire Invitational with wins of 10-8 over Bellaire and 6-4 over Onekama.

The first game went nine innings, with John Bower getting the win in relief. Brandon Pritchard went 3-for-3, Wade Luxford went 3-for-4 and Garrett Luxford went 2-for-3.

The Panthers (19-3) beat Onekama in the title game as the Luxfords each singled and doubled in support of pitcher Cam Hollenbeck.

Benzie Central falls in title game at Pine River

Pine River scored three runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Benzie Central 8-6 in the championship game of the Pine River Invitational.

Benzie (12-9) opened with a 9-2 win over Lakeview as Ben Nugent, Richard Wells and Josh Thaxton had two hits each. Nugent and Wells each added two RBIs.

Micah Parshall was the winning pitcher, allowing one hits while striking out five.

Thaxton suffered the loss against Pine River. He allowed two hits in six innings before leaving for a reliever.

Pacing the offense were Nick Cooper, who went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Dale Pringle, Connor Nugent, Ben Nugent and Logan Schendel, who each had two hits. Schendel also batted in two runs.

Charlevoix goes 1-1 in Birch Run tournament

Matt Teuscher pitched a seven-inning complete game and Danny Waldron and Shannon Gillespie had two hits each as Charlevoix defeated Suttons Bay 5-3 in the opener of the Birch Run tournament.

One of Gillespie's hits was a double. He also batted in two runs.

The Rayders (7-12) lost to the host team 6-0 in the title game.

TC Central JV tops Grayling for the title

Matt Zehner tossed a five-hitter and struck out six as the TC Central JVs edged Grayling 6-4 in the final of the Benzie Central tournament.

Jeremy Whyte, Josh Pilarski (double), Derek Diekman (RBI) and Brandon Goff (double) had two hits. Kyle Griffin and Diekman drove in runs.

Central (12-8) advanced with a 17-0 romp over Benzie Central.

Shane Darrow had two hits and five RBIs and Zehner three hits, including a double. Griffin was the winning pitcher, allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.

Drew Weinbrecht (two runs, two RBIs), Paul Hood (three runs), Diekman (two runs, three RBIs) and Jeff Stych (two RBIs) added two hits.

SOFTBALL

Allen Park Cabrini wins Glen Lake Invitational

Allen Park Cabrini, the top-ranked team in Division 4, won the Glen Lake Invitational with a pair of shutouts.

Cabrini blanked Marquette 1-0 in the championship after opening with a 10-0 triumph over the host Lakers.

Glen Lake, which bounced back with a 2-0 shutout of TC West in the consolation, was limited to two hits against Cabrini.

Danielle Noonan tossed a six-hitter and struck out four for Glen Lake (14-9) against TC West. Chelsea Klumpp drove in both of Glen Lake's runs with an infield single in the second inning and a RBI double down the left field line in the fourth.

Marquette reached the final with a 4-3 victory over the Titans.

Elliott pitches Frankfort to tournament title

Jenny Elliott allowed just one hit in two games as Frankfort won the Bellaire Tournament.

Elliott tossed a one-hitter and struck out 12 as Frankfort topped Onaway 3-1 in the final.

Brenna Banktson hit a solo home run and Nicole Marshall added two hits for Frankfort (21-1).

Frankfort reached the title game with a 6-0 victory over Bellaire as Elliott tossed a no-hitter and struck out 11.

Banktson had three hits and Elliott a double for the Panthers, who play at Glen Lake on Tuesday in a key Northwest Conference contest.

Bellaire beat Suttons Bay in the consolation game of the tournament.

TC West cruises to Benzie JV tourney title

Melissa Hubbard pitched two shutouts and Traverse City West had a balanced hitting attack while winning the Benzie Central Junior Varsity Invitational.

The Titans (19-5) opened with a 2-0 win over Glen Lake, then defeated the host Huskies 15-0 in the final.

SOCCER

TC Liberty win Benzie Invitational

Megan Yeiter scored four goals on the day and goalie Megan Ritsema posted two shutouts as the Traverse City Liberty defeated Kalkaska 8-0 in the opener and Glen Lake 6-0 in the final of the Benzie Central Invitational.

The Liberty improved their record to 7-3.

Glen Lake advanced with a 1-0 win over Benzie.

The host team defeated Kalkaska 4-1 in the consolation final.

TC West 1

Davison scored twice in the final eight minutes, the first on a penalty kick, in a 3-1 victory over TC West.

Becca Sage had the lone goal for the Titans (5-4-1) early in the second half on an assist from Jamie Furstenberg to tie the contest 1-1.

TC West returns to action on Tuesday at the Coast Guard Fields against TC Central. The varsity game is set for 7 p.m.

Holland's Ally DeLaLuz scored with 37:01 leff in the game to give the Dutch a 1-0 soccer win over Traverse City Central.

Holland (9-3) outshot the Trojans, 5-4.

Goaltender Alyssa Budros was the hard-luck loser for Central (6-5-1).

Kelsey Minor scored a pair of goals and Jennifer Perrick was the winning goalie as the Traverse City Central junior varsity Black squad blanked the Holland JVs, 4-0.

Mikaela Smith added a goal and an assist for the Trojans (9-2-1), while Emma Berger contributed a goal and Kati Clayton had three assists.

TRACK

Bellaire boys finish fifth at Beal City

Graham Burry won the 110 hurdles (17.1) and 300 hurdles (43.8) to lead the Bellaire boys to a fifth-place finish at the Great Lakes Invitational in Beal City.

The Eagles racked up 57 points. Marion won the title with 138. Central was seventh with 48.

Bellaire's Andrew Moran added a second-place in the 800 (2:12), while teammate Seth McDaniels took third in the pole vault (11'6").
