05/07/2006EditorialNonsense must endElmwood Township Supervisor Derith Smith last week fended off a nasty smear campaign disguised as a recall election, a cynical effort spearheaded by disgruntled former township politicians and their cronies who found themselves out of work after Smith's 2004 election. It was politics as unusual as usual for the battlin' bayfront community that lies just north of Traverse City in Leelanau County. But Smith's victory means it's time for the nonsense to end, for Elmwood's sake. Real issues must take center stage, including how to deal with residential development pressure on a community that still retains significant rural charm, as well as an opportunity to create a jewel of a community bayfront park. Political jealously, obstructionism and sour grapes need to be broomed aside for Elmwood to fulfill its promise. Ousted former politicians and recall proponents like ex-supervisor Noel Flohe and ex-trustee John Stanek need to temper their bitterness and find something constructive to do with their time. And Elmwood voters need to keep a close eye on clerk Connie Preston, treasurer Debbie Street and trustees Terry Lautner and Jim O'Rourke. Those Flohe holdovers must put aside their animosity for Smith and focus on what's best for the community. They've done just the opposite since voters picked Smith in November 2004 to bring openness and honesty to their government.
