Suttons Bay rallies past Lake City in regional final

CHARLEVOIX - On the verge of elimination, Suttons Bay desperately needed a big play.
      Holly Orban provided it.
With Lake City serving to win the third game and complete a regional volleyball sweep, Orban delivered a huge kill to spark the Norse, who rallied to win Saturday's Class C regional title in five games.
"The set wasn't where she wanted it - it was about six feet behind the net - but Holly went up and drilled it right to the floor," said Suttons Bay coach Mike Kelly. "She saved us."
Lake City won the first two games 25-22, 26-24 and held a 25-24 lead in the third game before Orban's heroics lifted the Norse, 27-25. Suttons Bay won the final two games 25-15, 15-7 to claim the regional and advance to next week's quarterfinals at Rudyard.
Suttons Bay (51-13-5) served 97.2 percent in the 2½-hour marathon.
"We couldn't afford to (miss any serves)," Kelly said. "Lake City was just way too good."
The Norse opened with a 25-22, 26-24, 25-15 sweep of Inland Lakes.
Orban finished the day 30-for-30 at the service line with 43 kills, 11 blocks and 29 digs. Kelsey Wick was 24-for-25 with 2 aces, 35 kills, 5 blocks and 29 digs, and Maggie Walters added 21 kills and 10 blocks.
"Orban, Wick and Walters really played well," Kelly said. "They really responded and played as well as they have all year."
Also contributing for the Norse were Christa Nesky (22-25, 2 aces, 10 digs), Anna Pryor (33-33, 2 aces, 87 assists, 7 digs), Fran Belanger (43-43, 2 aces, 20 digs), Charlotte Stowe (23-24, 2 aces, 2 kills, 4 blocks, 22 digs) and Cecilia Aguayo (5 kills, 3 blocks).
Lake City advanced with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 victory over Kingsley in the first match of the regional.
Each of the three games was tied late - 19-19, 22-22 and 20-20 - before the Trojans pulled away.
"We played well, they just played better," Kingsley coach Dave Hall said. "We got up 12-1 in the first game and it almost came too easy. We were doing everything we worked on in practice all week and then we relaxed a little bit.
"They made a couple more plays than we did when it was crunch time."
Jill Walton had 10 kills to finish with 668 this season, breaking her own school record set last season.
Lauren Summerfield had 11 kills, 19 digs and was 21 for 22 serving while Walton was 12 for 13 with 22 digs and 2 blocks for Kingsley (54-10-6).
Brittany Denter (29 assists, 5 digs, 5 for 5), Lindsay DeFrance (12 for 12, 6 digs) and Angela Bodjack (2 kills, 1 block, 7 digs) also had a strong game for Kingsley.
