March 11, 2006Murder suspect ordered to jailBEULAH - Circuit Court Judge James Batzer sent Mark Unger to jail to await trial next month on first-degree murder charges in his wife's death.Unger, of Huntington Woods, is scheduled to be tried April 26 for the death of Florence Unger. Florence Unger, 37, died after she fell or was pushed from a boathouse as the couple spent a weekend at a Lower Herring Lake resort in southwestern Benzie County. She died in October 2003, and Mark Unger, 44, had been free on bond as his case wound through the legal system. Also Friday, Batzer ruled prosecutors from the Michigan Attorney General's office, who are trying the case, can present evidence from Oakland County medical examiner Dr. L. J. Dragovic. That reverses a decision from District Court Judge Brent Danielson. Prosecutors contend Florence Unger was alive after falling from the boathouse and her husband dragged her unconscious body into the lake. The autopsy listed a head injury as the cause of death, but Dragovic, who did not perform the autopsy though he reviewed its results, testified that evidence suggests Florence Unger drowned. Unger has maintained his innocence. The Ungers were going through a contentious divorce but nonetheless spent a weekend at the resort with their two sons.
