March 10, 2006Man arraigned over bogus burritoHe's charged with extortion over mouse tale
Ryan Goff, 20, sits in the 86th District Court Thursday, appearing amused as he was arraigned on a felony charge of attempted extortion. Ryan Daniel Goff, 20, laughed and smiled Thursday morning as 86th District Court Judge Thomas Phillips read elements of an attempted extortion charge against him. Goff is charged with a five-year felony after he allegedly put a dead mouse in a Taco Bell burrito in January and then attempted to get the restaurant chain to ante up for his silence. Grand Traverse County sheriff's investigators said Goff was at the Chum's Corner Taco Bell on Jan. 24 when he allegedly complained to an employee that his burrito tasted "funny." Goff later called Taco Bell and allegedly told a regional manager "It won't be a good day if the media finds out about this," according to court records. "There was an implied threat there to the regional manager," said county Prosecutor Alan Schneider about his decision to seek the five-year felony. Schneider alleges Goff was "kind of building his story" when he took the mouse burrito to the county health department and then to a veterinarian. Officials said Goff's girlfriend let the cat out of the bag when she told police she was with Goff when he bought frozen mice at an area pet store chain and saw him place one of the rodents in the burrito. The woman told police Goff said he hoped "to get rich quick," with the alleged scheme. Goff, already jailed on unrelated charges, turned serious in court when Phillips raised the bond against him to $100,000 cash. Goff is scheduled to appear in district court again for a preliminary examination on March 21 before Judge John Foresman. See related story:
