Georgia-Pacific closes Gaylord plant

GAYLORD - Georgia-Pacific will permanently close its particle board plant in Gaylord, a decision employees learned of today when they arrived for the 8 a.m. shift and found themselves locked out.
The immediate closure affects 210 employees, many of whom belong to the woodworking division of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. The plant was built in 1965 and was purchased by Georgia-Pacific in 1987.
"The majority of people are done today," said Terry Jans, union president of Gaylord's Local 166. "Most of the employees had no idea this was coming."
Company officials said a limited number of employees will remain at work over the next month to prepare the facility for final closure. Equipment will be removed and taken to other Georgia-Pacific facilities and the Gaylord property will be sold, said Orville Shockey, plant manager.
Employees will receive two months of severance pay and medical benefits. They also have the option to transfer to other Georgia-Pacific facilities in Wisconsin, Minnesota and throughout the South.
