St. Mary wins Cherryland Conference title

Herman tosses shutout to beat Leland, 3-0

LELAND — Lake Leelanau St. Mary clinched an outright Cherryland Conference softball title Wednesday with a 3-0 win over Leland.

Sue Herman pitched the shutout for the Eagles (21-9, 7-1). Mary Lingaur and Anne Kuznicki had two hits apiece for St. Mary. Ashley Maleski had a pair of hits for the Comets (14-17, 5-3).

Lingaur and Haley Korson drove in runs for the Eagles, who scored solo runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings.

The two teams started a doubleheader Tuesday with Leland winning the opener 5-3, forcing the nightcap to decide the title. The second game was wiped out by rain Tuesday and moved to Wednesday.

St. Mary will play host Frankfort in the Division 4 regional Saturday.

Mason County Eastern faces Mesick in the other half of the regional. The winner advances to the quarterfinals, hosted by St. Francis.

In other regionals Saturday, Traverse City West plays Mount Pleasant in Division 1 at Bay City Central, Cadillac plays Petoskey in Division 2 at Essexville-Garber, Gladstone takes on Kalkaska and St. Francis meets Whittemore-Prescott in Division 3 at St. Francis, Ellsworth and Rapid River collide in the Division 4 opener at Rogers City while Posen and Gaylord St. Mary square off in the second game.

The quarterfinals are Tuesday with the semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday.
