06/04/2006Prep Track RoundupGlen Lake hurdler sweeps events at Division 4 meet
Bryan Sevensma of Glen Lake won the 110 high and 300 hurdles at the Division 4 state final on Saturday. He set a state record in the 300s and then nearly duplicated it. GRAND RAPIDS A Glen Lake athlete broke a Division 4 track and field state final record on Saturday. But it wasn't the usual one. Glen Lake senior Bryan Sevensma set a new meet mark in the 300 hurdles at Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern High School. He also just missed another record in winning the 110 hurdles in 14.8. The record is 14.62. But what else would one expect from an athlete who was perfect in the both disciplines this season? "What a great spring ... totally undefeated," Glen Lake coach Pete Edwards said. "A lot of guys say they're undefeated, but they don't count the conference meet, regional and state. "To say that he's undefeated all the way through states is amazing. It kind of speaks for itself." Glen Lake teammate Marissa Treece, who set Division 4 final records in the 1600 and 3200 as a freshman and broke them both last year, saw one of hers fall in a photo finish in the 1600. Ann Arbor Greenhills' Alexa Glencer won in 4:55.57, just 0.37 ahead of Treece and under her meet mark of 4:56.15. Complete final results of the Division 4 meet were unavailable at press time due to repeated weather delays at the meet. Even so, the Division 4 final was dotted with area state champions. In boys, McBain's Darin Bazuin won the discus with a throw of 157'7" while Forest Area's Greg Kinney took the high jump with a jump of 6'2". Finishing behind Sevensma in the 110 hurdles was Egan Quinn of TC St. Francis. He was fourth in 15.04. Nicholas Swisher of Onekama matched Quinn's finish later in the meet, taking fourth in the 1600 (4:34.47). Edwards said Sevensma's willingness to run in four events this season paid off at the state final, even though it may have hurt some of his success in the hurdles, particularly the 300 later in the meet. "It didn't always fit into his hurdle plans," Edwards said. "His willingness to help his teammates paid off today because he was doing four events every meet." Area athletes went 1-2 in the Division 4 girls pole vault. Karin Diebold of Central Lake won with a jump of 10 feet while Kelley Gavigan of TC St. Francis was second with the same height. St. Francis was also strong in the relays, taking third at 3200 (9:52.58) and tying for fourth at the 400 (52.51). Onekama was sixth in the 400 relay (52.59). Bellaire's Molly Poel was a standout in the shot put, taking sixth with a throw of 36'2". DIVISION 1 Traverse City Central senior Annie Otwell concluded her outstanding career by placing fifth in the 1600 (5:01.06). In two weeks, Otwell will compete in a national event. DIVISION 3 Manistee doubled up in the girls portion of the high jump at the Division 3 meet. Maegan Doyen of Manistee was fifth in the high jump (5'1") while teammate Mckenzie Majchrzak tied for eighth at the same height. Kingsley's Jill Walton and Benzie Central's Emily Nugent got in on the field event fun by both placing in the shot put. Walton was second (41'9") while Nugent placed fourth (36'2½"). Walton came back to take third in the discus (125'11"). Two area distance runners placed in the 3,200 as Benzie Central's Devyn Ramsey was sixth (11:36.2) and Elk Rapids' Amanda Hammer was eighth (11:38.42). Ashley Quick of Harbor Springs placed in the 1,600, taking eighth in 5:20.11. Two girls relay teams placed in Division 3 as Inland Lakes was fourth in the 1,600 relay (4:08.77) and East Jordan eighth in the 400 (51.53). Jasmin Pomeroy of Inland Lakes also tied for fourth in the 400 (59.12). In the boys meet, Mancelona's Adam Duerksen placed fourth in both hurdle events. He ran a 15.17 in the 110 high hurdles and posted a 40.8 in the 300s, where Kris Sundberg of Elk Rapids took sixth in 41.09. Aaron Simoneau of Manistee was second in the 3,200 (9:36.58). Taylor Voice of Boyne City placed in the pole vault, taking fourth in 13'6". Charlevoix was third in the 3,200 relay (8:01.15). Two area distance runners placed in the 1,600 run as Spencer Beatty of Harbor Springs was fourth (4:24.55) and Paul Grieve of Kalkaska seventh (4:26.87).
