Dean Michael Kinske is led out of 86th District Court Monday morning after his arraignment before Judge Thomas Phillips.
TRAVERSE CITY - A Suttons Bay teen is jailed on a $500,000 bond after he allegedly held a female classmate and her mother at gunpoint in a foiled abduction attempt.
Dean Michael Kinske, handcuffed and shackled as he was escorted by three Leelanau County sheriff's officials, appeared in Traverse City Monday for arraignment on felony charges before 86th District Court Judge Thomas Phillips.
Kinske, 18, appeared with attorney Marian Kromkowski, and pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree home invasion, assault with a dangerous weapon, and felony firearms possession stemming from a incident late Thursday at a Lime Lake Road residence.
Police said Kinske entered a female classmate's house in Cleveland Township and held the classmate and her mother hostage with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
Police said Kinske, who was masked and wearing camouflage, planned to take his classmate hostage for ransom, but after the classmate recognized his voice and Kinske was confronted by her parents, he fled.
Leelanau Sheriff Mike Oltersdorf said Kinske apparently drove to Newaygo County or Kent County, abandoned his Jeep and assault rifle, and decided to return to northern Michigan.
Kinske was arrested without incident Saturday afternoon by Grand Traverse County Sheriff's deputies on Silver Lake Road after a classmate recognized him and called police.
Police said Kinske apparently purchased the rifle allegedly used in the incident recently at Ace Buyers in Traverse City.
Kinske faces up to 20 years in prison and is scheduled for a preliminary examination on Feb. 17.
