Leland nets tourney title

      GRAND RAPIDS - Leland didn't lose a match en route to winning the Grand Rapids Northview Invitational for the first time.
      The Comets (39-4) beat four Class A teams and two Class B teams to take the title. Leland beat Lake Odessa-Lakewood - ranked second in Class B - 25-20, 25-20 in the final in what coach Laurie Glass called "a significant win for our program."
      In pool play Leland beat Holt (25-19, 25-15), Charlotte (25-16, 25-9) and Muskegon Mona Shores (25-14, 25-10). The Comets topped East Grand Rapids (25-12, 25-20) in the quarterfinals and Zeeland (25-23, 25-14) in the semifinals.
      Leland was trailing in the first game against Zeeland when Alisha Glass served seven straight aces. Jennifer Hecht closed out the second game with four straight kills.
      Alisha Glass finished with 91 kills, 31 aces, 52 digs and six blocks while Hecht added 36 kills, 31 digs and seven aces. Other key players for the Comets were Daina Parent (26 digs, six aces, two kills), Whitney Grant (126 assists, 17 digs), Anna Lau (eight kills, seven blocks), Ashley Erhardt (26 digs) and Erin Sneed (23 digs, four aces).

Lake City survives area field at Charlevoix
      Lake City defeated Pellston to win the 16-team Charlevoix Invitational on Saturday.
      Harbor Light Christian took third place with a 25-18 triumph over the host Rayders in the consolation match.
      Pellston advanced to the final with a 25-23, 25-19 triumph over Charlevoix. The Rayders (13-11-7) beat TC St. Francis (25-12, 10-25, 17-15) in the quarterfinals.
      Charlevoix beat Benzie Central (25-19, 25-13) and split with Manton (12-25, 25-22) and Pine River (25-19, 23-25) in pool play.
      Charlevoix's Bethany Pearson had 11 blocks, 15 kills and 21 digs to make the all-tournament team.
      Ashlie Bradley added 22 kills and 11 digs and Sasha Spencley 21 kills, 11 digs and seven blocks. Zita Anderson contributed 76 assists, Sally Haselschwardt 15 kills and Emily Heffling 20 digs.
      Kingsley, coming off a big win over league rival Suttons Bay on Wednesday, went 2-2 in the tournament.
      The Lady Stags lost to Lake City (25-16, 26-24) and beat Grayling (25-10, 25-14) and Glen Lake (25-14, 25-16) in pool play before losing to Pellston (25-22, 25-19).
      Jill Walton had 27 kills, six aces, 29 digs and four blocks for 28-3-6 Kingsley. Lauren Summerfield added 13 kills, 32 digs, four blocks and was 38 for 38 serving with four aces.
      Also contributing were Ariel Egan (eight kills, 19 digs, two aces), Angela Bodjack (10 kills, 24 for 24 serving, two aces, 14 digs) and Brittany Denter (47 assists, 15 digs, four blocks, 25 for 28 serving).
      TC St. Francis (13-13-7) was 1-1-1 in pool play before losing to Charlevoix in the quarterfinals. In pool play the Gladiators lost to Harbor Light Christian (25-19, 25-20), beat Inland Lakes (25-22, 25-18) and split with Rudyard (21-25, 25-18).
      Kristina Droste led St. Francis with 18 kills, six aces, 59 digs and one block. Jill Kuhlman added 11 kills, one assist, five aces and 44 digs. Kelley Gavigan had 10 kills, three assists, one ace, 30 digs and one block and Lauren Currie 35 assists, one ace, 14 digs and one block.
      Kalkaska also qualified for the quarterfinals before falling to Harbor Light Christian (25-17, 26-24). The Blazers beat Elk Rapids (25-13, 25-12) and split with Suttons Bay (25-22, 14-25) and Pellston (27-25, 21-25) in pool play.
      Shantelle Deater had 20 kills, nine blocks, 27 digs and three aces for Kalkaska (25-9-6). Other leaders were Megan Dunn (20 assists, 21 digs, five aces), Kaley Babcock (20 kills, 21 digs, 16 for 19 serving, one ace), Danielle Luca (25 assists, 15 digs, eight kills, five aces, two blocks), Kaiti Jones (25 digs, five kills, 27 for 31 serving, six aces) and Sam Graham (11 kills, 10 digs, 38 for 42 serving, seven aces, two blocks).
      Suttons Bay won the lower division title with a 25-12, 25-18 victory over Benzie Central.
      The Norse went 1-1-1 in pool play by splitting with Kalkaska, beating Elk Rapids (25-17, 25-17) and losing to Pellston (26-27, 24-26). Suttons Bay then beat Grayling (25-13, 25-10) and Manton (25-22, 25-16) to reach the final of the white pool.
      Holly Orban was 49 for 49 serving with eight aces, 36 kills, 10 blocks and 29 digs. Kelsey Wick was 24 for 25 serving with four aces, 43 kills, five blocks and 31 digs for Suttons Bay (31-7-5).
      Other contributors for the Norse were Christa Nesky (33 for 35 serving, two aces, 22 digs), Anna Pryor (54 for 57, five aces, 91 assists, 16 digs), Fran Belanger (47 for 47, 10 aces, 19 digs), Charlotte Stowe (41 for 42, two aces, 26 digs) and Maggie Walters (31 kills, five blocks, 11 digs).
      Manton went 1-1-1 in pool play with a loss to Pine River (25-23, 25-18), a split with Charlevoix and a win over Benzie Central (25-20, 25-20). The Rangers opened the lower division with a win over Inland Lakes (21-25, 25-21, 15-12) before losing to Suttons Bay.
      Kacey O'Dell had 19 kills, five aces and 55 digs to lead Manton. Other top performers were Kayla Nielsen (26 kills, six blocks, 12 digs, 40 for 42 serving, four aces), Lacie Miller (67 digs, four aces, nine kills), Mary Westbrook (24 digs, two aces), Kendra Baty (25 digs) and Jaimie Hest (48 assists, 25 digs, four kills).
     
Mancelona takes fourth at Onaway Invitational
      Mancelona won its pool before losing 25-19, 25-22 to Hillman in the semifinals of the Onaway Invitational.
      The host team won the tournament. Boyne City took third with a 25-16, 25-23 victory over Mancelona in the consolation match.
      Mancelona (8-7-8) beat Mackinaw City (25-24, 25-22) and Brimley (25-18, 25-15) and split with Harbor Springs (19-25, 25-17) and Posen (17-25, 25-20) in pool play.
      Stephanie Adams had five blocks, 10 kills and 11 aces for Mancelona. Katie DeRuiter was 28 for 30 serving with 39 kills, three blocks and 19 digs. Katie Alexander added seven aces and 15 kills while Kelley Moore was 18 for 19 serving with 34 digs.

GYMNASTICS
Traverse City fifth at Kenowa Hills Invitational
      Sparked by the performances of sophomores Kelsey Hyde and Ashleigh Shea, the Traverse City co-op gymnastics team finished fifth out of 11 teams at the Kenowa Hills Invitational.
      The finish was TC's highest of the season. The team posted its second-best team total with 127.6 points.
      Hyde tied for first place in the Division 1 vault competition with a 9.4. She was also third in beam (8.15), third on floor (8.75) and third all-around (33.725).
      Shea, competing in Division 2, tied for fifth on vault (8.6).

      Scott Horrigan had two goals and an assist and DanLathers two goals as Gaylord topped Escanaba, 9-2.
      Nick Michaels had four assists for Gaylord (11-5-1).
     
Grosse Pointe South 7
Grand Traverse Bay 0

      Grosse Pointe South erupted for five first-period goals and added two more in the second to defeat Grand Traverse Bay 7-0 in the consolation game of the Falcon Invitational hockey tournament at East Kentwood.
      G.T. Bay (9-7-2) returns to action against Traverse City West on Wednesday at Centre ICE.

WRESTLING
Manton's Skiver wins heavyweight division
      Manton's Tom Skiver went 3-0 to win the heavyweight division at the Reed City Invitational.
      The Rangers were sixth among the 12 teams with 69½ points. Jenison won the meet with 224 points.
      Skiver had two pins and a technical fall in the final. Brandon Norman (215) was second with a 3-1 record, which included three pints.
      David Jackson (3-1 at 152) and Corey Webb (4-1 at 112) each placed third.
