Phantoms spook the North Stars

Eight players find back of the net for Mahoning Valley

TRAVERSE CITY - Most of the autograph seekers had departed by the time the Traverse City North Stars emerged from the lockerroom.
Following an 8-2 loss to Mahoning Valley, head coach Scott Gardiner kept his team in the lockerroom for over a half hour to discuss the disappointing outcome after the team came back to play its first home game in over a month.
"We had a long heart-to-heart with our team," Gardiner said. "It's frustrating to come home and not get the effort from the team. We've lost confidence in ourselves and our team and we've got to get back on track."
The Phantoms led 3-1 after one period of play, as Milan Drevenak and Marc Menzione scored to break an early 1-1 tie.
Mahoning added three more goals and eight different Phantom players scored.
Traverse City came into the game with a 7-5 home record, but didn't seem into the game, even after Brett Englebright tied the game at 1-1 with assists from Sal Ragusa and Eric Elmblad 5:52 into the contest.
Drevenak had three points, adding two assists to his goal.
Jeremy Kaleniecki made 18 saves and gave up five scores, being pulled 1:54 into the third period. Ryan Donovan came in and had 10 stops, giving up three more goals.
Ryan Zapolski made 20 saves for Mahoning Valley.
Gardiner said the team hasn't played the same since a 10-0 loss to the USA Development U-18 team at the NAHL Showcase in Boardman, Ohio, last week.
"That really hurt," Gardiner said. "Since then, mentally we haven't been able to get ourselves back in the game."
The North Stars were 0-for-6 on the power play, but did play well short-handed, limiting the Phantoms to one goal on seven power plays.
TC's Matt Larke added an unassisted goal in the third period, putting the puck in off the skate of Menzione from behind the net.
The North Stars added Jon Madden to their roster on Friday. The forward, who was the team's first tender last summer, joined the team after playing part of the season with the Indianapolis Ice of the United States Hockey League. Gardiner said Madden is a player the team can build around.
ICE CHIPS: Twelve of Mahoning Valley's players are from Michigan. ... The family of Stars forward Patrick Nagorsen rented the suite at Centre ICE for the game. ... The attendance was 723.
