Man sentenced for slur

He must spend four days in jail, write apology

TRAVERSE CITY - Bryan Leigh Hensley was sentenced to four days in jail and must write a letter of apology to a black college student for scribbling a racial slur on her dorm-room door.
Hensley, 22, of Traverse City, received his sentence on a drunk and disorderly charge Friday from District Judge John Foresman.
He was charged after he wrote "African Tribal Bitch" on the door of Krystel Jackson, 18, a Northwestern Michigan College student on Nov. 2. He had faced vandalism charges, but agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge.
"I'm sorry for the whole ordeal. It was a childish act," Hensley told Foresman. "I was intoxicated, and it was really hard for me to know what I was doing."
Hensley has credit for one day already served in jail. Foresman also fined him $100 and ordered him to pay $200 in court costs.
"This could've been a lot more serious than it was," Foresman told him. "It's really a bad situation, but if you learned from what you did, it could be positive for the rest of your life."
NMC officials banned Hensley from the campus's two dorm buildings for more than a year unless he's accompanied by a security officer. Hensley is not a student there.
Jackson, who was born in South Africa and grew up in Switzerland, did not attend the sentencing. She said later that she thought the sentence was "appropriate."
"I can't complain," she said. "It's better than nothing."
