January 18, 2006Boyne City beats East Jordan on snowy nightBOYNE CITY - A night when freezing rain and snow forced most area teams to take the night off, Boyne City defeated East Jordan 66-53 in Lake Michigan Conference basketball Tuesday.Tyler Kruzel poured in 26 points to pace the Ramblers (3-6, 2-4 LMC), while Grant Ameel added 16 and Taylor Voice 15. The game was tied 29-29 at halftime before Boyne surged ahead 45-40 at the end of the third quarter. Leading East Jordan were Jeff Keyser (14 points) and Eric Hansen (12). SKIING TC West sweeps BNC meet for first time Abby Rider and Andrew Winters each placed first in slalom and second in the giant slalom to lead Traverse City West to its first-ever sweep of a Big North Conference ski meet. "We're off to a great start, but it's early yet," said Titans head coach Jerry Stanek. "I thought both (boys and girls) competed very well as a team." The West boys finished with 34 points in the league opener at Nub's Nob. Petoskey was second with 60. They were followed by TC Central (95), Cadillac (154½) and Gaylord (161). Winters won the slalom with two-run combined time of 55.65 seconds. Petoskey's Kiefer Mack was second (57.75), Central's Matt Madion third (57.77), the Titans' Alex Adams - skiing out of the No. 6 hole - fourth (58.99) and West's Drew Aiken fifth (59.27). Mack won the giant slalom in 50.9. He was followed by Winters (50.91), Petoskey's L.B. McVicker (50.95), West's Soren Nielsen (52.13) and the Titans' Kevin McClelland (52.23). The West girls finished with 40 points. Petoskey was second (73), Cadillac third (92), TC Central fourth (106) and Gaylord fifth (145). Rider won the slalom in 56.77. Cadillac's Hannah Orshal was second (58.28), Central's Kim Gorbutt third (59.43), West's Janelle Schofield fourth (59.58) and Petoskey's Emily Murray fifth (1:00.38). Gorbutt captured the giant slalom in 52.08, followed by Rider (53.03), teammate Lauren Lockwood (53.54), Orshal (53.93) and Petoskey's Rebecca McMurray (54.03). The Petoskey boys and Cadillac girls won the B team races. Glen Lake girls, Benzie boys triumph in LMSC Ali Drake won slalom and finished second in giant slalom to lead the Glen Lake girls ski team to victory in Lake Michigan Ski Conference action at Crystal Mountain. The Lakers, who co-op with Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau St. Mary's, finished with 60 points. They were followed by Onekama (Bear Lake, Brethren) with 87, Bellaire (Inland Lakes ) with 106 and Benzie Central (Frankfort) with 110 Drake won the slalom with a two-run combined time of 54.13 seconds. Manistee's Katie Bramble was second (55.68), Glen Lake's Sarah Wiesen third (57.74), Onekama's Danielle Olson fourth (59.77) and Manistee's Nicole Ganger fifth (1:00.82). The top five finishers in GS were Bramble (39.92), Drake (40.21), Ganger (41.06), Bellaire's Rachel Eklund (41.37) and Wiesen (42.32). In the boys' race, Benzie Central edged Manistee 52-62. Bellaire was third (70) and Glen Lake fourth (129). Manistee's Conor Pelton swept both races, claiming the slalom in 46.68 and the GS in 35.36. Tom Nichols of Bellaire was second in both races (47.29 slalom, 36.24 GS). Rounding out the top five in slalom were Benzie's Eric Baumeler, third (50.19); Glen Lake's Kris Marin fourth (51.39) and the Huskies' Gabe Braveheart, fifth (51.63). In giant slalom, Michael Bobain of Manistee was third (37.24), Baumeler fourth (37.27) and Marin fifth (37.85). VOLLEYBALL Blazers sweep pair from Lake Michigan rivals Led by the play of Shantelle Deater, Kaley Babcock and Danielle Luca, Kalkaska swept Traverse City St. Francis and Elk Rapids in Lake Michigan Conference volleyball. The Blazers (4-1 league) defeated St. Francis 26-24, 25-12, 25-22 as Deater had eight kills, 13 digs and four blocks; Babcock added five kills and 15 digs; and Luca had 13 assists and 17 digs. Also contributing were Megan Dunn (7 assists, 8 digs, 9-for-11 serving), Kaiti Jones (4 kills, 9 digs) and Sam Graham (9 kills, 4 aces, 14 digs, 3 blocks). In a 25-19, 25-14, 25-11 win over Elk Rapids, Deater had seven kills and two blocks, Babcock five kills and three digs and Luca nine assists, three kills and four digs. Lindsay McLean added four blocks and Ashley Martini was 5-for-6 serving with two aces. TC Christian JV 3 Suttons Bay frosh 0 The Traverse City Christian junior varsity improved to 15-4-1 on the season with a 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 sweep over the Suttons Bay freshmen. Leading the Sabres were Beth Hansen (90 percent pass efficiency), Leah Cobb (100 percent serving, 2 aces) and Maura O'Brien (defense).
