January 15, 2006Prep RoundupLeland defends its titleTRAVERSE CITY - Leland got defensive - literally - about its Traverse City West Invitational title.The Comets won the volleyball tournament for the second straight season. Leland topped host TC West in the final by a 25-19, 25-16 score. "It was a real good day all-around, but especially on defense," Leland coach Laurie Glass said. "In particular the blocking schemes that we have been working on. This weekend they understood why we do the things we want them to do." Leland (27-4) also served aggressively in the tournament, firing 50 aces. Jennifer Hecht and Alisha Glass each had 18 aces to lead the way. Hecht added 26 kills, 36 digs and six blocks and Alisha Glass 82 kills, 28 digs and 12 blocks. Daina Parent added four kills, 25 digs and nine aces and Whitney Grant three kills, 108 assists and 14 digs. Erica Breen contributed 13 kills and eight blocks and Anna Lau seven kills and 11 blocks. In pool play, Leland posted wins over TC Central (25-12, 25-14), Hart (25-14, 25-8) and Freeland (25-21, 25-13). The Comets topped TC Central (25-23, 25-16) in the quarterfinals and Cedar Springs (25-10, 25-16) in the semifinals. TC West reached the final by beating Pentwater (25-10, 25-20) in the quarterfinals and Freeland (23-25, 25-17, 15-4) in the semifinals. In pool play the Titans topped Cedar Springs (25-13, 25-14), Pentwater (25-7, 25-6) and Pinconning (25-11, 25-9). Kelsey Sears had 60 kills and 68 digs to lead TC West (17-8). Jenna VanZee added 15 kills and 37 digs and Marta Hunt 26 kills. Kalyn McPherson added 13 kills to go along with 86 assists. Other contributors were Liz Donn (33 digs, eight aces), Jenna Shaw (40 digs), Jessica Oakley (14 kills, 10 aces), Amanda Foust (30 assists) and Jordan Davenport (11 kills). TC West's JV team won a tournament in Saginaw. MORE VOLLEYBALL Kingsley claims crown at Shepherd Invitational Kingsley opened the Shepherd Invitational with a split against Clare, then never lost again en route to winning the volleyball tournament. Kingsley (23-1-6) topped Caro 25-9, 25-13 in the final. The Lady Stags opened pool play with a split against the Pioneers (20-22, 21-13) before beating Fowler (21-16, 21-6), Chippewa Hills (21-16, 21-10) and Byron (21-19, 21-15). Byron is ranked sixth in Class C. Kingsley then beat Shepherd (25-16, 25-10) in the quarterfinals and McBain (25-19, 25-9) in the semifinals. Tournament MVP Jill Walton had 63 kills, 17 blocks, 59 digs and was 53 for 56 serving with 16 aces for Kingsley. Lauren Summerfield added 35 kills, 56 digs and was 82 for 83 serving with 21 aces. Ariel Egan added seven kills, five aces and 15 digs and Brittany Denter 86 assists, 13 kills, three aces and 20 digs. Other key contributors were Angela Bodjack (nine kills, 28 for 31 serving, 17 digs), Lindsay DeFrance (defense) and Jessica Dine (six kills, 28 for 30 serving, eight assists). Charlevoix fourth at Mason County Eastern Hudsonville Tri-unity Christian reeled off 10 straight points in the second game to beat Charlevoix in the semifinals of the Mason County Eastern Invitational. Tri-unity, ranked third in Class D, posted a 25-21, 25-10 triumph to eliminate the Rayders (10-8-5). Charlevoix went 2-2 in pool play. The Rayders beat Big Rapids (25-18, 20-25, 15-11) and Newaygo (26-24, 25-15) and lost to Mason County Eastern (25-16, 25-21) and Tri-unity (25-21, 25-18). Emily Heffling had 33 digs and Murphy Gillespie 17 kills and 11 blocks for Charlevoix. Zita Anderson added 69 assists and 18 digs. Also key for Charlevoix were Ashlie Bradley (23 digs, 12 aces, 16 kills), Bethany Pearson (29 blocks, 10 kills) and Sally Haselschwardt (15 kills, eight blocks). Robin Petzak and Sasha Spencley each had 14 digs. TC Christian wins league JV tournament title TC Christian topped Leland 25-16, 25-13 in the finals of the Cherryland JV tournament. The host Sabres (13-4-1) beat Buckley 25-15, 25-23 in the semifinals while Leland advanced with a 25-13, 25-8 triumph over Northport. Meghan Terpstra served 91 percent with 21 aces and 14 assists for TC Christian. Also contributing for the Sabres were Joni Yahr (17 kills, 14 aces), Arielle Kanitz (12 kills) and Kara Romstadt (11 assists). Named to the all-tourney team were Terpstra, Haley VerSnyder (Leland), Jessie Earl (Northport) and Kaila Buck (Buckley). Colburn helps lead Gladiators to title TC St. Francis beat the host school 25-23, 25-22 in the final of the eight-team Kalkaska JV Invitational. The Glads (18-5-1) beat Petoskey 25-20, 25-12 in the semifinals. Jamie Colburn had six kills, six digs, three blocks and seven aces for St. Francis. Kristen Marsh added 10 kills and Marley Martin two blocks. WRESTLING TC Central captures the Tournament of Endurance Three TC Central wrestlers took first as the host Trojans captured the six-team Tournament of Endurance. TC Central finished with 288 points. Chippewa Hills was second with 233 in the tourney, where each wrestler takes to the mat the maximum five times in a day. Winning titles for TC Central were Todd Dean (103 pounds), Elias Fowler (119) and Will Arnold (189). Second were Dan Hurst (130), Keegan Schrider (140), Nick Fowler (145), Eric Maly (160), Ben Amon (215) and Nick Rademaker (Hwt). Third were Jacob Secor (112), David Podsaid (125) and Seth Wistrand (152). Stags undefeated to win Guldner Memorial Kingsley went 4-0 and finished with 230 points to win its own tournament. The Stags beat TC St. Francis (62-9), Manistee (56-24), TC Central B (55-23) and Cadillac (63-18) at the Glenn Guldner Memorial Invitational. The TC Central B team was second with 151 points. Central, Cadillac (146 points) and Manistee (137) all tied for second with 2-2 records, but the Trojans won the tiebreaker. Posting 4-0 records for the Stags were Billy Preston (112-119 pounds), Joe McGrath (125-130) and Robert Kautman (171). Kyle Steed (145-152) was 3-0 while posting 2-0 records were Kyle Cornell (119-125), Carl Webb (135) and John Geothals (135). Going undefeated for TC Central B were Derek Doty (103), Kyle McLachlin (189) and Ryan Harp (215). Four TC West wrestlers place at Rockford Invite Traverse City West finished seventh among the 11 teams at the Rockford Invitational. Rockford won the individual tournament. Derek Kenny (215 pounds) reached the finals before settling for a second-place finish. Seth Chargo (135) and Trevor Gillison (119) were third while Corey Bidwell (103) took fourth. TC West hosts Petoskey on Wednesday. SWIMMING Jones, Sylvester help TC sweep double dual Wes Jones and Tyler Sylvester each won four events as Traverse City swept a double dual swim meet. Traverse City topped Bridgman 64-38 and South Haven 60-42. Bridgman eked out a 54-47 victory over the Rams. Sylvester and Jones teamed with Sam Kittendorf and Declan Craven to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:48). Jones teamed with Darryl Hallman, Dylan Humitz and Andrew Brunner to win the 200 medley relay (1:50.6). Sylvester, Humitz, Hallman and Brunner won the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.98). Sylvester also won the 200 freestyle (1:59.27) and 100 freestyle (54.23). Jones took the 50 freestyle (24.29) and 500 free (5:11.72). Traverse City, 5-1 in dual meets, also got wins from Hallman in the 200 individual medley (2:26.75), Brunner in the 100 butterfly (56.07) and Kittendorf in the 100 backstroke (1:02.22). Traverse City swims at Saginaw Arthur Hill on Tuesday. HOCKEY GT Bay 5 Mid-Michigan 1 Mike Tinkle had two goals as Grand Traverse Bay beat Mid-Michigan 5-1 in a penalty-filled contest. Twenty-four infractions were whistled in the game, including 14 on GT Bay (9-5-1). Alex Zelinski scored in the first period for the Reps on assists by Dan Fisher and Matt Zagers. Tinkle scored both of his goals in the second period. The first was on an assist from Jed Dean while Bill Auxier and Dean had the helpers on the second. Auxier, from Tyler Pons, and Dean closed out the scoring for the Reps. Nick Rausch was the winning goalie for GT Bay, which travels to Cheboygan on Friday.
