January 14, 2006Two recall efforts continueTRAVERSE CITY - Proponents of recall efforts in two Leelanau County communities are still circulating petitions to force elections that would, at the earliest, come in May.In the village of Northport, opponents of the proposed municipal sewer need 75 signatures each to trigger recall votes for seven village council members. County Clerk Michelle Crocker said neither set of petitions have been filed with her office, but it's already too late for the potential recalls to make the Feb. 28 ballot. The next possible election date is May 2. John Kutilek, who filed the Northport petitions in November, said circulators already have sufficient signatures but are gathering extra in case some are disqualified when the county clerk verifies them. The Northport petitions target village president Michael Rogers Sr. and trustees William Brendel, Richard Burmeister, Steven Mattson, Fredrick Thomas, Stephen Wetherbee and Barbara VonVoigtlander. All seven petitions list identical reasons involving the proposed municipal sewer, including failure to bring the matter to a public vote and lack of direct testing to prove an environmental need for the sewer. A contingent of Elmwood Township residents also seeks to gather 511 signatures from registered township voters to force a recall election for supervisor Derith Smith. John Stanek, a former Elmwood trustee ousted by voters in 2004, filed a petition against Smith in November. It alleges Smith's actions as supervisor "have been detrimental to the taxpayers legally and financially" and cites numerous examples including "wrongfully terminating" the township marina's former harbormaster and deputy harbormaster.
