January 13, 2006TC West wins battle of young teamsTitans pull out 51-24 BNC victory
Traverse City West freshman Dustin Drake, top, wrestles with Alpena sophomore Jacob Orban Thursday at Traverse City West High School. But when youth goes head-to-head with youth, talent and determination are often the deciding factor. Traverse City West was determined on Thursday. The Titans outdueled Alpena 51-24 in a Big North Conference wrestling match featuring a pair of teams who have six freshmen each in their starting lineup. "When you get to wrestle anybody that's equal to your ability, it's good to get a win," said West coach Berard Priante. "TC West just came out and out-wrestled us," said Alpena coach Jake Stenz. "They were ready for us." The Titans (6-11 overall, 1-1 Big North) opened the dual with three straight decisions to take an early 10-0 lead. Dustin Drake started things off with a come-from-behind win over Jacob Orban, getting a reversal and three-point near-fall with 20 seconds left to win 20-16. Trevor Gillison (20-4) topped Morgan Stenz, the younger brother of Alpena coach Jake Stenz, 6-5 in one of the day's better matches. Stenz had lost only one match coming in. "I was really looking forward to that match and it lived up to it," said Jake Stenz. Josh Elmer's 12-0 decision at 125 pounds gave the Titans a 10-0 advantage. After a Wes Setcoski pin at 130, TC West's Seth Chargo improved his record to 17-7 with a 20-4 technical fall over Corey Setcoski. Brad Gillison (19-5) pinned Alpena's Rob Berry in 2:38 at 140 in a matchup of freshmen. Alpena (1-1 BNC) then roared back with three straight wins to take its only lead at 24-21, getting pins by undefeated Zane Stenz at 145 and Joel Ferguson (15-9) at 152 and a forfeit at 160. It was West all way for the remainder of the match. Jake Morse was down 5-4 to Alpena's Derek Bromund late in his match at 171 pounds, then rolled Bromund and got a pin with 11.4 seconds left. "That was a big turnaround at the time," Priante said. "It got the team going and fired them up for the last four matches." Brian Rollenhagen notched a pin in 3:08 at 189 to start a run of four consecutive wins for the Titans, including three straight falls. Derek Kenney followed with a pin in 44 seconds at 215 and Matt Town won another all-freshman matchup with a pin in 1:49 at 275. Corey Bidwell received a forfeit win at 103. "When I looked at the book, I thought it might come down 7-7 and it'd just be a matter of who got more pins," Priante said. "But it didn't turn out that way."
