Man pleads guilty to writing racial slur

Sentencing hearing is set for next week

TRAVERSE CITY - A 22-year-old Traverse City man will be sentenced this month on a drunk and disorderly charge for penning a racial slur on the dorm room door of a black college student.
Bryan Leigh Hensley is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 20 in district court.
Hensley admitted to police that he wrote "African Tribal Bitch" on the dorm room door of Northwestern Michigan College student Krystel Jackson, 18, Traverse City Police Capt. Patrick Hinds said.
Hensley, who is not a NMC student, originally was charged with vandalism, but agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge.
Jackson initially told police after the Nov. 2 incident that she did not want to pursue criminal charges against Hensley, but changed her mind.
College officials banned Hensley from the campus's two dorm buildings for more than a year unless he is escorted by a security officer.
Jackson plans to attend NMC for the spring semester, which begins Friday. She's not sure what she'll do after that.
"I just wish it never happened. Everything would be easier," she said.
"Everybody's been great, but it did disrupt a lot of things."
