Central wins Grand Haven Invite

      GRAND HAVEN - David Podsaid earned MVP honors Saturday in leading Traverse City Central to a victory in the nine-team Grand Haven Wrestling Invitational.
      Podsaid went 4-0 in winning the 125-pound weight division.
      The Trojans finished with 272 points. Seventh-ranked Grand Haven was second with 240.
      Central had three other weight class winners - Todd Dean at 103, Seth Wistrand at 152 and Nick Rademaker at 275.
      Finishing second were Nick Fowler at 145, Will Arnold at 189 and Ben Amon at 215. Fowler won his 100th career match during the day.
      Taking third were Jacob Secor at 112 and Elias Fowler at 119.
      Placing fourth were Dan Hurst at 130, Mike Kuemin at 135 and Jazz Salo at 171.

Glads place a half dozen
      Traverse City St. Francis placed six wrestlers at the Frankfort Invitational on Saturday, including a pair of champions.
      Jerrit Martin won the 103-pound title with a 3-0 mark and three pins and Andrew Anderson took the 152-pound class with a 3-0 record and a pair of pins.
      Paul Elliott at 125 and Paul Taylor at 275 were third with 3-1 records, while Dana Larsen (140) and Zach Lizenby (16) took fourth with 2-2 marks. Elliott had three pins.
     
Manton 6th in St. Louis
      Manton brought back four medals from the St. Louis Invitational and placed sixth in the 12-team field.
      Brandon Norman won the 215-pound weight class with a perfect 3-0 mark, getting a pin in each win.
      David Jackson (152) and heavyweight Tom Skiver each placed second. Jackson was 2-1 with a pair of pins and Skiver went 1-1 with a pin.
      Corey Webb was 3-1 at 112 with a pin to place third.
      Chippewa Hills won the tournament with 179 points. Manton had 73.

SWIMMING
Traverse City third in South Haven Invite
      Andrew Brunner won the 100-yard freestyle in 50.41 seconds Saturday to spark Traverse City to a third-place finish in the six-team South Haven Invitational.
      Brunner also took second in the 50 freestyle (23.34).
      Tyler Sylvester placed second in the 200 IM (2:12.46) and third in the 100 butterfly (1:01.22) while Wes Jones took second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.25) and 500 freestyle (5:11.19).
      Jones and Sylvester teamed with Darryl Hallman and Sam Kittendorf to take second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:44.36).
      Brunner, Hallman, Dylan Humitz and Sylvester placed third in the 200 medley relay (1:50.27).
      Brunner, Humitz, Jones and Charlie Stone came in third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:39.29).

VOLLEYBALL
Suttons Bay wins Manton Invitational
      Suttons Bay won its second volleyball tournament of the season Saturday when the Norse claimed the Manton Invitational.
      Suttons Bay (19-4-4) defeated Forest Area in the finals 21-16, 21-15.
      In pool play, the Norse downed Manton (21-9, 21-15), Forest Area (21-18, 21-13) and Bear Lake (21-9, 21-12) and split with Marion (18-21, 21-17) and Mancelona (18-21, 21-11).
      Suttons Bay then beat Manton in the semifinals 21-17, 21-14.
      Kelsey Wick (48 of 49 serving with 5 aces, 46 kills, 2 blocks, 32 digs) and Anna Pryor (42 of 44 serving with 6 aces, 49 assists, 13 digs) were picked to the all-tournament team.
      Also starring for the Norse: Holly Orban (48 of 48 serving with 4 aces, 53 kills, 3 blocks, 35 digs), Krista Neskey (52 of 55 serving with 4 aces, 66 assists), Fran Belanger (36 of 36 serving with 6 aces, 20 digs), Charlotte Stowe (38 of 42 serving with 5 aces, 13 kills, 2 blocks, 42 digs) and Maggie Walters (20 kills, 6 blocks, 3 digs).
      Forest Area defeated Marion 25-21, 25-23 in the semifinals after losing to the Eagles in pool play (12-21, 15-21). Other pool play results for the Warriors included wins over Bear Lake (21-13, 21-8), Mancelona (21-4, 21-18), an 18-21, 21-18 split with Manton and an 18-21, 15-21 loss to Suttons Bay.
      The Warriors (10-8-3) were led by all-tournament selections Maria Babrick (73 assists, 33 digs) and Juliana Barbieri (63 digs, 15 kills). Other contributors included Ashley Pomorski (17 kills, 18 digs), Lizzy Shy (15 kills, 40 digs), Chelsea Snyder (14 kills, 36 digs) and Kari Ingersol (18 kills, 13 digs).
      Manton placed fourth in its tournament. In pool play, the Rangers lost to Marion (15-21, 12-21) and Suttons Bay, split with Bear Lake (18-21, 22-19), beat Mancelona (21-8, 22-19) and split with Forest Area. The Rangers then lost to Suttons Bay in the semifinals and Marion (25-17, 25-20) for third.
      Leading Manton: Kayla Nielson (54 kills, 6 blocks), Kacey O'Dell (50 assists, 4 digs, 5 aces), Lacey Miller (99 digs), Kendra Baty (49 digs) and Morgan Emery (11 kills, 4 blocks).
      Mancelona beat Bear Lake (21-6, 21-18), split with Marion (21-19, 10-21) and then lost to Manton, Forest Area and Suttons Bay.
      Pacing Mancelona: Katie Alexander (6 aces, 7 kills, 47 digs), Katie DeRuiter (3 aces, 14 kills, 56 digs) and Tijon Burkhauser (79 digs).
     
Leland places second in Ferris State tourney
      Leland won six matches Saturday to reach the finals of the 27-team Ferris State Invitational before falling to Class A power East Kentwood in the finals 25-21, 25-21.
      En route to the title match, the Comets beat Vestaburg (25-3, 25-13), Frankenmuth (25-8, 25-7), Lowell (25-21, 25-15) and Forest Hills Eastern (25-16, 25-21).
      In the quarterfinals of the Gold Division, Leland beat Unity Christian (25-27, 25-21, 15-9). The Comets (20-4) then defeated Portage Central (25-20, 25-17) in the semifinals.
      Alisha Glass (102 kills, 9 assists, 46 digs, 9 blocks, 11 aces) and Jennifer Hecht (38 kills, 42 digs, 10 blocks, 8 aces) were named to the all-tournament team.
      Also starring for the Comets: Whitney Grant (134 assists, 4 blocks, 4 aces), Daina Parent (4 kills, 8 assists, 26 digs, 6 blocks, 6 aces), Anna Lau (10 kills, 7 blocks) and Erica Breen (13 kills, 14 blocks).
     
Kingsley goes 7-0 to win its own tournament
      Home sweet home.
      Kingsley went undefeated in seven matches to claim the crown in the Kingsley Invitational, including a 25-17, 25-16 championship match victory over Traverse City St. Francis.
      The Stags' Jill Walton was named tournament MVP and Lauren Summerfield and Brittany Denter made the all-tournament team.
      In pool play, Kingsley (17-1-5) downed St. Francis (25-12, 25-14), Frankfort (25-9, 25-15), TC Christian (25-15, 25-18), Benzie Central (25-12, 25-18), Bellaire (25-16, 25-19) and Buckley (25-10, 25-17).
      Walton had 53 kills, 14 aces, 15 blocks and 44 digs, while Summerfield contributed 31 kills, 7 aces, 45 digs and 5 blocks and Denter registered 93 assists, 28 digs, 3 blocks and 7 aces.
      Other contributors for the Stags included Ariel Egan (11 kills, 18 digs, 3 aces), Angela Bodjack (7 kills, 5 aces, 17 digs) and Lindsay DeFrance (18 digs, 3 assists, 4 aces).
      After losing to Kingsley in the first match of pool play, St. Francis split with Buckley (23-25, 25-20), beat Frankfort (25-17, 25-15) and Benzie (25-19, 25-13), split with Traverse City Christian (25-20, 22-25) and beat Bellaire (25-17, 25-14).
      Sparking the Gladiators (8-8-6): Kristina Droste (60 digs, 15 aces, 11 kills, 2 assists), Jill Kuhlman (50 digs, 2 aces, 16 kills) and Lauren Currie (30 assists, 9 kills, 8 aces, 22 digs). Droste and Currie were on the all-tournament team.
      Traverse City Christian finished third. In pool play, the Sabres split with Buckley (17-25, 25-24) and Bellaire (18-25, 25-17), lost to Kingsley, beat Frankfort (25-13, 25-23), split with St. Francis and lost to Benzie (11-25, 22-25). Christian then beat Benzie (26-24, 16-25, 15-6) in the consolation match.
      Leading the Sabres (8-2-3) were all-tournament pick Amanda Send (42 of 44 serving with 8 aces, 14 digs, 22 kills), Anne Friedlander (35 of 38 serving with 4 aces, 8 digs, 21 kills, 20 assists and 5 blocks) and Kara Finney (32 of 36 serving with 2 aces, 9 kills, 27 digs, 12 assists and 2 blocks).
      Benzie in pool play beat Bellaire (25-18, 25-22) and Buckley (25-14, 25-14), lost to Kingsley and St. Francis, beat Frankfort (25-15, 25-23) and Christian.
      The Huskies were led by all-tournament selection Meegan Scheele (18 kills, 22 digs, 6 assists, 4 aces), Katie Allen (10 kills, 13 digs, 16 assists, 12 aces), Didi Romero (14 kills, 9 digs, 12 assists, 2 aces) and Brianne Lindsay (8 kills, 20 digs).
     
Pellston captures Inland Lakes Invite
      Pellston beat Onaway 25-7, 25-21 to win the Inland Lakes Invitational.
      In pool play, the Hornets (17-2-3) downed East Jordan (25-17, 25-6), Onaway (25-19, 25-21), Central Lake (25-11, 25-13) and Engadine (25-17, 25-21). Pellston rallied to beat Pickford (17-25, 25-15, 25-19) in the semifinals.
      Leading the Hornets: Amy Bachleda (25 kills, 8 aces, 8 block kills, 18 digs), Gabby Bachleda (38 kills, 33 digs, 50 of 55 serve receives), Holly Burkhart (47 kills, 18 digs, 22 of 24 serve receives) and Jill McNitt (18 aces, 124 assists, 21 digs).
     
Rayders fourth at Petoskey Invite
      Charlevoix finished fourth Saturday in the Petoskey Invitational.
      The Rayders split with Petoskey (17-25, 25-17) and beat Harbor Springs (25-17, 25-20) and St. Ignace (25-18, 25-17) to finish second in pool play.
      Charlevoix then lost to Harbor Light (25-21, 25-15) in the semifinals and Petoskey (25-22, 27-25) in the consolation finals.
      Leading the Rayders: Emily Heffling (37 serve receives, 27 digs), team MVP Sally Haselschwardt (19 kills, 4 blocks), Ashley Bradley (10 aces, 25 digs, 19 kills), Beth Pearson (15 kills, 15 blocks), Murphy Gillespie (15 blocks, 18 kills) and Zita Anderson (67 assists, 14 digs).
