February 26, 2006Prep RoundupTrojans send team-record six to stateDAVISON - Nick Rademaker won a Division 1 regional title at 275 pounds and Traverse City Central set a team record Saturday by qualifying six wrestlers for the individual state meet.The 1997 and 2003 Trojans both qualified five wrestlers. "These kids worked hard for this," said Central coach Ian Hearn. "Qualifying six is great for our program, but we had a shot at qualifying three more, so we have some broken hearts. "They'll bounce back. We have team quarterfinals coming up on Friday." In addition to Rademaker's regional title, Elias Fowler finished second at 112 pounds, Dan Hurst was fourth at 130 and three finished third - Todd Dean (103), Will Arnold (189) and Ben Amon (215). They all advanced to the individual state tournament March 9-11. Jacob Secor (112), Nick Fowler (145) and Jazz Salo (171) each won one match before being eliminated, and Seth Wistrand, a qualifying hopeful at 152 pounds, sat out with the flu. Traverse City West got one wrestler through to state finals from the same regional. Seth Chargo was third at 135 with a 3-1 record. West's Trevor Gillison (119) just missed a state-final bid, falling in his final match to a returning state placer. Gillison finished the season with a 40-10 record. Like Gillison, Derek Kenny (215) also went 1-2 at the regional. Kenny did break the school record for reversals in a season with 39. MORE WRESTLING Manton sends two, Glads one to state final Manton had a pair of state qualifiers from the Division 4 individual regional the Rangers hosted. Tom Skiver (Hwt.) and Brandon Norman (215 pounds) each earned berths at the state final meet. Skiver won his weight class with a 3-0 record while Norman advanced with a second-place finish after a 2-1 record. Manton's Corey Webb (112) won a match, but did not place. Andrew Anderson of TC St. Francis placed second at 145 pounds with a 2-1 record. TC St. Francis had three wrestlers in the individual regional. BOWLING Elk Rapids girls advance from bowling regional The Elk Rapids girls advanced to the Division 3 state final by placing fourth at Saturday's team regional at Timber Lanes in Traverse City. Rogers City won the girls regional title with a 3,322 after six Baker and three regular games. Ewen-Trout Creek was second (3,292) followed by Iron Mountain (3,004) and Elk Rapids (2,972). Baldwin won the boys regional with a 4,076. Mason County Central was second (3,967) with Rogers City third (3,962) and Kent City fourth (3,925). VOLLEYBALL Another perfect league season for Leland Leland went undefeated in the Cherryland Conference for the 12th straight season. The Comets (59-4) beat each of the other four league schools in the tournament on Saturday. Leland beat Northport (25-8, 25-15), Leelanau School (25-9, 25-8), TC Christian (25-8, 25-10) and Buckley (25-3, 25-10). The Comets started its usual starting lineup in the first game and its projected lineup for next season in the second. Alisha Glass finished with 24 kills, 3 blocks and 3 aces for Leland. Anna Lau added 12 kills and 4 blocks, Erica Breen 14 kills, Julianna Lisuk 8 kills, Daina Parent 6 kills and 8 aces and Whitney Grant 60 assists and 10 aces. TC Christian finished second in the tournament and the overall standings. The Sabres beat Leelanau School (25-6, 25-8), Buckley (25-12, 25-17) and Northport (25-15, 25-11) at the tournament. Anne Friedlander was 45 for 45 serving with 13 aces, 9 digs, 10 kills, 12 assists and 2 blocks for TC Christian (17-9-7). Other key contributors for the Sabres were Emily Morgan (39 for 44, 13 aces, 6 digs, 14 assists), Kara Finney (22 for 24, 7 aces, 16 digs, 6 kills, 5 assists), Amber Hansen (12 for 12, 3 aces, 6 digs), Joni Yahr (10 kills, 2 blocks) and Amanda Send (9 for 10, 2 aces, 2 digs, 9 kills). Harbor Light Christian captures tourney title Harbor Light Christian topped Kingsley 21-19, 21-14 in the final of the eight-team Forest Area Invitational. Kingsley reached the final with a 21-18, 21-16 triumph over McBain Northern Michigan Christian in the semifinals. The Lady Stags (46-9-6) beat Forest Area (21-19, 21-9), Johannesburg-Lewiston (21-8, 21-10) and Hillman (21-17, 21-15) in pool play. Lauren Summerfield had 31 kills, 4 blocks, 39 digs and was 33 for 33 serving for Kingsley. Jill Walton added 22 kills, 4 aces, 3 blocks and 20 digs. Ariel Egan (14 kills, 27 for 30, 3 aces, 22 digs), Angela Bodjack (7 kills, 29 for 31, 16 digs, 3 blocks), Brittany Denter (6 kills, 73 assists, 15 digs, 25 for 28) and Lindsay DeFrance (13 for 15, 3 aces, 19 digs) also led Kingsley. Glen Lake went 1-2 in pool play. The Lakers opened with losses to McBain Northern Michigan Christian (21-12, 21-16) and Harbor Light Christian (21-8, 21-11) before bouncing back to beat Manton (21-15, 21-15). The Lakers beat Forest Area (21-15, 21-15) in the crossover. Jessica Odziana had 30 digs and 8 kills while Sam Rader was 26 for 27 serving with 15 digs for the Lakers (14-22-4). Also contributing for Glen Lake were Chelsea Klumpp (17 for 18 serving, 3 aces, 21 digs, 7 kills), Sarah Zywicki (21 for 22, 3 aces, 24 digs, 11 kills), Lindsey Dusen (21 assists, 6 kills, 16 digs) and Amanda Mikowski (6 kills). Forest Area went 1-1-1 in pool play. The Warriors lost to Kingsley (21-19, 21-9), split with Hillman (21-16, 12-21) and beat Johannesburg-Lewiston (21-11, 21-20). Maria Babrick had 29 assists and Chelsea Snyder 15 kills and 20 digs for Forest Area (28-15-9). Kari Ingersoll was 21 for 22 serving with 9 kills while Lizzy Shy added 20 digs.
