Central to honor Majerle

Ceremony planned before Friday's game with West

TRAVERSE CITY - Dan Majerle is returning to his old stomping grounds.
And Traverse City Central High School has quite a "Welcome Home" party planned.
Majerle, a former Trojan standout who went on to play basketball in the Olympic Games and the NBA, will be honored prior to Friday night's TC Central-TC West varsity game.
"It's going to be a big night," said Larry Nykerk, a longtime Central teacher and coach who helped plan the event. "A lot of time and effort has gone into it."
Friday's ceremonies will also serve as a fund raiser for the TC Central Hall of Fame, which will induct Majerle on June 10.
Among the items for sale Friday will be commemorative programs, T-shirts and Majerle trading cards. Majerle will sign autographs in the school's small gymnasium during halftime and following the game.
Majerle, 40, currently serves as a color analyst for Phoenix Suns television broadcasts. The 14-year NBA veteran and three-time All-Star is a member of the Suns' Ring of Honor. He finished with 10,925 career points.
Majerle will actually spend most of Friday at Central. He will visit classrooms, eat lunch in the cafeteria and take part in a pep assembly in the afternoon.
The former Central Michigan University standout will also have a chance to reminisce with former teammates from the Trojans' 1983 regional championship squad.
Pregame ceremonies are planned for 7:30 p.m. A Majerle banner will be unveiled similar to the one honoring Tom Kozelko, another former TC Central athlete who played in the NBA in the 1970s. Kozelko was honored last season.
"This is part of an effort to honor all of our athletes who went on to play professionally," Nykerk said. "It's something that we've talked about for a long time."
Tickets will be available at the door. Nykerk advised fans to arrive early.
