February 14, 2006Suttons Bay school chief is leavingSuperintendent ran two districtsSUTTONS BAY - The dual superintendent of Suttons Bay and Glen Lake schools will leave after March 31 to take a position in Grosse Pointe.Thomas Harwood on Monday tendered his resignation to the Suttons Bay school board. Grosse Pointe Public Schools recently hired him to become the district's assistant superintendent of special education. Steven Hall, Suttons Bay school board president, said Harwood has said he'd like to continue serving the two local districts through the end of this school year. Suttons Bay and Glen Lake school officials held a series of public forums to evaluate the superintendent sharing and must decide whether to continue that arrangement. "That was a point of discussion even if Tom didn't leave," Hall said. Suttons Bay board member Roger Merriman said district officials were aware Harwood might leave when they considered the joint superintendent role. "We knew when we got him that he was capable of bigger and better things," he said. "We wanted to look at it as a concept. Our idea was to see if this could work." Merriman represents Suttons Bay on the oversight committee evaluating the one-year cooperative agreement that established the joint superintendent position. Harwood was hired as superintendent of Suttons Bay Public Schools in 2003 and served since July as joint superintendent for Suttons Bay and Glen Lake. He previously served as executive director of student services for Lake Orion schools.
