February 12, 2006Leland wins tourney for fourth straight timeSUTTONS BAY - Another tournament, another trophy for Leland.The Comets, ranked No. 1 in Class D, won the Suttons Bay Invitational for the fourth straight year, and they didn't even have to beat No. 3-ranked Pellston in the finals to do it. The host Norse upset the Hornets in three games to advance to the finals, which Leland won 21-7, 21-12. Leland defeated Pellston in pool play in straight games. The Comets (49-4) breezed through pool play, downing Frankfort (21-7, 21-6), Inland Lakes (21-4, 21-6) and Kalkaska (21-9, 21-13). Suttons Bay (21-12, 21-8), Mesick (21-4, 21-11) and Pellston (21-17, 21-7) fell to the Comets in power pool. In the semifinals, the Comets downed Hancock 21-9, 21-14 before topping the host team in the finals. "It was a really good day for all of us," Leland coach Laurie Glass said. "It was a good, consistent day all around." Alisha Glass was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Jennifer Hecht and Daina Parent. For the day, the Comets' Alisha Glass had 58 kills, 26 assists, 30 digs, 11 blocks and 35 aces. Hecht added 26 kills, 20 digs and 22 aces and Parent chipped in a career-high 17 kills to go along with 7 digs and 10 aces. Whitney Grant had 106 assists and was named MVP of the morning session. Anna Lau contributed a career-high 21 kills and 11 blocks. Leland turns around and plays the Norse again on Wednesday in Suttons Bay as part of a tri meet with Forest Area. Suttons Bay (42-10-5) went 3-0 in the morning pool with wins over Elk Rapids (21-16, 21-16), TC St. Francis (21-17, 21-19) and Hancock (23-21, 21-12). In power pool, the Norse lost to Leland and Pellston (21-13, 21-16) and split with Mesick (7-21, 21-11). But Suttons Bay roared back into the finals by beating Forest Area (21-12, 21-17) and Pellston (19-21, 24-22, 21-14). "We just kind of let up and didn't play well," Suttons Bay coach Mike Kelly said of the power pool. "Then we did play well." The victory over Pellston in the semifinals was the first this season for the Norse. Holly Orban was 47 for 49 serving with 5 aces, 52 kills, 12 blocks and 30 digs while Kelsey Wick was 41 for 43 with 5 aces, 32 kills, 9 blocks and 37 digs. Anna Pryor was 54 for 55 serving with 11 aces, 96 assists and 19 digs for the Norse. Also contributing for Suttons Bay were Christa Nesky (33 for 36, 5 aces, 8 digs), Fran Belanger (28 for 30, 3 aces, 3 kills, 13 digs), Charlotte Stowe (59 for 63, 9 aces, 7 kills, 45 digs), Maggie Walters (8 for 12, 5 aces, 24 kills, 6 blocks, 12 digs) and Cecilia Aguayo (6 kills, 3 blocks, 4 digs). Forest Area opened the tournament with a 21-14, 21-16 loss to Mesick before bouncing back with wins over Charlevoix (21-9, 21-12) and Buckley (21-7, 21-5). In the second-place power pool, the Warriors split with Glen Lake (14-21, 21-16), beat Kalkaska (21-14, 21-14) and split with Hancock (12-21, 21-19) to reach the quarterfinals. Ashley Pomorski had 11 kills and was 42 for 47 serving with 6 aces for Forest Area (26-12-9). Other contributors were Lizzy Shy (16 kills, 33 digs, 10 aces), Maria Babrick (63 assists), Kari Ingersoll (23 kills, 9 blocks, 31 for 31 serving), Juliana Barbieri (10 kills, 28 digs, 22 for 22, 5 aces), Kayla Helsel (26 digs, 19 for 22) and Samantha Haas (19 digs). Glen Lake split all three of its matches in the second-place pool. The Lakers split with Forest Area, Hancock (14-21, 22-20) and Kalkaska (21-14, 15-21). The Lakers lost to Pellston (21-14, 21-6), split with TC Christian (19-21, 21-14) and beat Northport (21-14, 21-13) in the morning. Lindsey Dusen had 29 assists, 13 kills and 22 digs and Jessica Odziana 15 kills, 4 aces and 19 digs for the Lakers (12-16-4). Sabrina Galla added 23 assists, 6 kills, 6 digs and was 29 for 32 serving with 7 aces. Calli Hurlin was 34 for 36 and Sarah Zywicki 33 for 36 serving for the Lakers. Hurlin added 8 kills, 3 aces, 27 digs and Zywicki 8 kills and 31 digs. Chelsea Klumpp added 8 kills and 23 digs. TC St. Francis won the third-place pool by splitting with Inland Lakes (21-23, 21-15) and TC Christian (17-21, 21-14) and beating Charlevoix (21-17, 23-21). The Gladiators (16-15-9) lost to Hancock (21-14, 21-14) and Suttons Bay and beat Elk Rapids (21-8, 21-9) to get there. Key contributors for the Gladiators were Lauren Currie (4 kills, 39 assists, 9 aces, 20 digs), Kelley Gavigan (4 kills, 3 aces, 34 digs, 3 aces), Kristina Droste (9 kills, 2 assists, 6 aces, 46 digs) and Jill Kuhlman (13 kills, 2 assists, 3 aces, 33 digs, 3 blocks). Charlevoix went 2-1 in its pool with wins over Buckley (21-9, 21-8) and Mesick (21-13, 21-19) and a loss to Forest Area. The Rayders went to the third-place power pool on the tiebreaker and beat TC Christian (21-12, 21-19) and Inland Lakes (21-19, 21-17) before falling to St. Francis. Bethany Pearson had 25 kills, 6 blocks and 24 digs while Zita Anderson 82 assists and 24 digs. Ashley Bradley added 19 kills, 21 digs and 4 aces for Charlevoix (19-14-7). Sally Haselschwardt contributed 17 kills and Emily Heffling 34 digs. Northport won the fourth-place pool with a win over Buckley (22-20, 21-16) and splits with Elk Rapids (9-21, 21-19) and Frankfort (18-21, 21-12). The Wildcats opened with a loss to Pellston (21-14, 21-6), a split with TC Christian (21-11, 10-21) and a loss to Glen Lake. Leading 7-21-3 Northport were Cecilia Kohler (14 kills, 15 digs, 29 for 31 serving, 9 aces), Krista Young (8 kills, 16 aces, 14 digs), Octavia Buss (3 kills, 3 aces, 17 digs), Betsy Shiner (4 kills, 7 aces, 10 digs) and Sophi Mosher (3 kills, 26 assists, 5 aces, 3 digs).
